Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

Ezekiel 10:1-19

Verse 1. And I looked and saw above the expanse, above the heads of the cherubim, the likeness of a throne of sapphire. Verse 2. And the LORD said to the man clothed in linen, “Go inside the wheelwork beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in. Verse 3. Now when the man went in, the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple, and a cloud filled the inner court. Verse 4. Then the glory of the LORD rose from above the cherubim and stood over the threshold of the temple. The temple was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD. Verse 5. The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks. Verse 6. When the LORD commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from within the wheelwork, from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel. Verse 7. Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand and took some of the fire that was among them. And he put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who received it and went out. Verse 8. (The cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their wings.) Verse 9. Then I looked and saw four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub. And the wheels gleamed like a beryl stone. Verse 10. As for their appearance, all four had the same form, like a wheel within a wheel. Verse 11. When they moved, they would go in any of the four directions, without turning as they moved. For wherever the head faced, the cherubim would go in that direction, without turning as they moved. Verse 12. Their entire bodies, including their backs, hands, and wings, were full of eyes all around, as were their four wheels. Verse 13. I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” Verse 14. Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle. Verse 15. Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the River Kebar. Verse 16. When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and even when they spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not veer away from their side. Verse 17. When the cherubim stood still, the wheels also stood still, and when they ascended, the wheels ascended with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. Verse 18. Then the glory of the LORD moved away from the threshold of the temple and stood above the cherubim. Verse 19. As I watched, the cherubim lifted their wings and rose up from the ground, with the wheels beside them as they went. And they stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the LORD, with the glory of the God of Israel above them.

So His own arm brought salvation, and His own righteousness sustained Him. Verse 17. He put on righteousness like a breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on His head; He put on garments of vengeance and wrapped Himself in a cloak of zeal. Verse 18. So He will repay according to their deeds: fury to His enemies, retribution to His foes, and recompense to the islands. Verse 19. So shall they fear the name of the LORD where the sun sets, and His glory where it rises. For He will come like a raging flood, driven by the breath of the LORD. Verse 20. “The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn from transgression, ” Verse 21. “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD. “My Spirit will not depart from you, and My words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth or from the mouths of your children and grandchildren, from now on and forevermore,” says the LORD.

Luke 17:20-37

Verse 20. When asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God will not come with observable signs. Verse 21. Nor will people say, ‘Look, here it is,’ or ‘There it is.’ For you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst. ” Verse 22. Then He said to the disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. Verse 23. People will tell you, ‘Look, there He is!’ or ‘Look, here He is!’ Do not go out or chase after them. Verse 24. For just as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so will be the Son of Man in His day. Verse 25. But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. Verse 26. Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man: Verse 27. People were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. Verse 28. It was the same in the days of Lot: People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. Verse 29. But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. Verse 30. It will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed. Verse 31. On that day, let no one on the housetop come down to retrieve his possessions. Likewise, let no one in the field return for anything he has left behind. Verse 32. Remember Lot’s wife! Verse 33. Whoever tries to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. Verse 34. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed: one will be taken and the other left. Verse 35. Two women will be grinding grain together: one will be taken and the other left.” Verse 37. “Where, Lord?” they asked. Jesus answered, “Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.”
