FIRST READING

Habakkuk 2:5-11

Verse 5. and wealth indeed betrays him. He is an arrogant man never at rest. He enlarges his appetite like Sheol, and like Death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself and collects all the peoples as his own. Verse 6. Will not all of these take up a taunt against him, speaking with mockery and derision: ‘Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’ Verse 7. Will not your creditors suddenly arise and those who disturb you awaken? Then you will become their prey. Verse 8. Because you have plundered many nations, the remnant of the people will plunder you— because of your bloodshed against man and your violence against the land, the city, and all their dwellers. Verse 9. Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high and escape the hand of disaster! Verse 10. You have plotted shame for your house by cutting off many peoples and forfeiting your life. Verse 11. For the stones will cry out from the wall, and the rafters will echo it from the woodwork.

Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

Isaiah 1:1-9

Verse 1. This is the vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Verse 2. Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I have raised children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me. Verse 3. The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger, but Israel does not know; My people do not understand.” Verse 4. Alas, O sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a brood of evildoers, children who act corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD; they have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him. Verse 5. Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep rebelling? Your head has a massive wound, and your whole heart is afflicted. Verse 6. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head, there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and festering sores neither cleansed nor bandaged nor soothed with oil. Verse 7. Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire. Foreigners devour your fields before you — a desolation demolished by strangers. Verse 8. And the Daughter of Zion is abandoned like a shelter in a vineyard, like a shack in a cucumber field, like a city besieged. Verse 9. Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a few survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have resembled Gomorrah.

PSALM

Psalm 32:1-7

Verse 1. Of David. A Maskil. Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Verse 2. Blessed is the man whose iniquity the LORD does not count against him, in whose spirit there is no deceit.
Verse 3. When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day long.
Verse 4. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was drained as in the summer heat.
Verse 5. Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the guilt of my sin.
Verse 6. Therefore let all the godly pray to You while You may be found. Surely when great waters rise, they will not come near.
Verse 7. You are my hiding place. You protect me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance.

SECOND READING

John 8:39-47

Verse 39. “Abraham is our father,” they replied. “If you were children of Abraham,” said Jesus, “you would do the works of Abraham. Verse 40. But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing. Verse 41. You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.” Verse 42. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me. Verse 43. Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message. Verse 44. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. Verse 45. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me! Verse 46. Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me? Verse 47. Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
