FIRST READING
Jeremiah 26:16-24
Verse 16. Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets, “This man is not worthy of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God!” Verse 17. Some of the elders of the land stood up and said to the whole assembly of the people, Verse 18. “Micah the Moreshite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and told all the people of Judah that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, and the temple mount a wooded ridge.’ Verse 19. Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did Hezekiah not fear the LORD and seek His favor, and did not the LORD relent of the disaster He had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great harm on ourselves!” Verse 20. Now there was another man prophesying in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land the same things that Jeremiah did. Verse 21. King Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and officials heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah found out about it, he fled in fear and went to Egypt. Verse 22. Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor along with some other men. Verse 23. They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him put to the sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people. Verse 24. Nevertheless, Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

2 Timothy 2:14-26
Verse 14. Remind the believers of these things, charging them before God to avoid quarreling over words, which succeeds only in leading the listeners to ruin. Verse 15. Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth. Verse 16. But avoid irreverent, empty chatter, which will only lead to more ungodliness, Verse 17. and the talk of such men will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, Verse 18. who have deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred, and they undermine the faith of some. Verse 19. Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from iniquity.” Verse 20. A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay. Some indeed are for honorable use, but others are for common use. Verse 21. So if anyone cleanses himself of what is unfit, he will be a vessel for honor: sanctified, useful to the Master, and prepared for every good work. Verse 22. Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Verse 23. But reject foolish and ignorant speculation, for you know that it breeds quarreling. Verse 24. And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and forbearing. Verse 25. He must gently reprove those who oppose him, in the hope that God may grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. Verse 26. Then they will come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, who has taken them captive to his will.
