Verse 1. This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. Verse 2. At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was imprisoned in the courtyard of the guard, which was in the palace of the king of Judah. Verse 3. For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying: “Why are you prophesying like this? Verse 6. Jeremiah replied, “The word of the LORD came to me, saying: Verse 7. Behold! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, ‘Buy for yourself my field in Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it.’ Verse 8. Then, as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and urged me, ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and redemption. Buy it for yourself.’” Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. Verse 9. So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and I weighed out seventeen shekels of silver. Verse 10. I signed and sealed the deed, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales. Verse 11. Then I took the deed of purchase— the sealed copy with its terms and conditions, as well as the open copy— Verse 12. and I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the sight of my cousin Hanamel and the witnesses who were signing the purchase agreement and all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard. Verse 13. In their sight I instructed Baruch, Verse 14. “This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Take these deeds— both the sealed copy and the open copy of the deed of purchase— and put them in a clay jar to preserve them for a long time. Verse 15. For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land.”

GOSPEL

Luke 16:19-31

Verse 19. Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor. Verse 20. And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores Verse 21. and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. Verse 22. One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried. Verse 23. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side. Verse 24. So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’ Verse 25. But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony. Verse 26. And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us.’ Verse 27. ‘Then I beg you, father,’ he said, ‘send Lazarus to my father’s house, Verse 28. for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also end up in this place of torment.’ Verse 29. But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let your brothers listen to them.’ Verse 30. ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they will repent.’ Verse 31. Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
