Semicontinuous (Track 1)

FIRST READING

Jeremiah 2:23-37

Verse 23. “How can you say, ‘I am not defiled; I have not run after the Baals’? Look at your behavior in the valley; acknowledge what you have done. You are a swift young she-camel galloping here and there, Verse 24. a wild donkey at home in the wilderness, sniffing the wind in the heat of her desire. Who can restrain her passion? All who seek her need not weary themselves; in mating season they will find her. Verse 25. You should have kept your feet from going bare and your throat from being thirsty. But you said, ‘It is hopeless! For I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.’ Verse 26. As the thief is ashamed when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced. They, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets Verse 27. say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’ They have turned their backs to Me and not their faces. Yet in the time of trouble, they say, ‘Rise up and save us!’ Verse 28. But where are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them rise up in your time of trouble and save you if they can; for your gods are as numerous as your cities, O Judah. Verse 29. Why do you bring a case against Me? You have all rebelled against Me,” Verse 30. “I have struck your sons in vain; they accepted no discipline. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a voracious lion.” Verse 31. You people of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: “Have I been a wilderness to Israel or a land of dense darkness? Why do My people say, ‘We are free to roam; we will come to You no more’? Verse 32. Does a maiden forget her jewelry or a bride her wedding sash? Yet My people have forgotten Me for days without number. Verse 33. How skillfully you pursue love! Even the most immoral of women could learn from your ways. Verse 34. Moreover, your skirts are stained with the blood of the innocent poor, though you did not find them breaking in. But in spite of all these things Verse 35. you say, ‘I am innocent. Surely His anger will turn from me.’ Behold, I will judge you, because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’ Verse 36. How impulsive you are, constantly changing your ways! You will be disappointed by Egypt just as you were by Assyria. Verse 37. Moreover, you will leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not prosper by their help.”

PSALM

Psalm 58

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David. Do you indeed speak justly, O rulers? Do you judge uprightly, O sons of men?
Verse 2. No, in your hearts you devise injustice; with your hands you mete out violence on the earth.
Verse 3. The wicked are estranged from the womb; the liars go astray from birth.
Verse 4. Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like a cobra that shuts its ears,
Verse 5. refusing to hear the tune of the charmer who skillfully weaves his spell.
Verse 6. O God, shatter their teeth in their mouths; O LORD, tear out the fangs of the lions.
Verse 7. May they vanish like water that runs off; when they draw the bow, may their arrows be blunted.
Verse 8. Like a slug that dissolves in its slime, like a woman’s stillborn child, may they never see the sun.
Verse 9. Before your pots can feel the burning thorns— whether green or dry— He will sweep them away.
Verse 10. The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged; they will wash their feet in the blood of the wicked.
Verse 11. Then men will say, “There is surely a reward for the righteous! There is surely a God who judges the earth!”

Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

2 Chronicles 12:1-12

Verse 1. After Rehoboam had established his sovereignty and royal power, he and all Israel with him forsook the Law of the LORD. Verse 2. In the fifth year of Rehoboam’s reign, because they had been unfaithful to the LORD, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem Verse 3. with 1,200 chariots, 60,000 horsemen, and countless troops who came with him out of Egypt— Libyans, Sukkites, and Cushites. Verse 4. He captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. Verse 5. Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have forsaken Me; therefore, I have forsaken you into the hand of Shishak.’” Verse 6. So the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is righteous.” Verse 7. When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but will soon grant them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak. Verse 8. Nevertheless, they will become his servants, so that they may learn the difference between serving Me and serving the kings of other lands.” Verse 9. So King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem and seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had made. Verse 10. Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them to the care of the captains of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace. Verse 11. And whenever the king entered the house of the LORD, the guards would go with him, bearing the shields, and later they would return them to the guardroom. Verse 12. Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him, and He did not destroy him completely. Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.

PSALM

Psalm 119:65-72

Verse 65. You are good to Your servant, O LORD, according to Your word.
Verse 66. Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in Your commandments.
Verse 67. Before I was afflicted, I went astray; but now I keep Your word.
Verse 68. You are good, and You do what is good; teach me Your statutes.
Verse 69. Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep Your precepts with all my heart.
Verse 70. Their hearts are callous and insensitive, but I delight in Your law.
Verse 71. It was good for me to be afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes.
Verse 72. The law from Your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver.

SECOND READING

Hebrews 13:7-21

Verse 7. Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Verse 8. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Verse 9. Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace and not by foods of no value to those devoted to them. Verse 10. We have an altar from which those who serve at the tabernacle have no right to eat. Verse 11. Although the high priest brings the blood of animals into the Holy Place as a sacrifice for sin, the bodies are burned outside the camp. Verse 12. And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate, to sanctify the people by His own blood. Verse 13. Therefore let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace He bore. Verse 14. For here we do not have a permanent city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. Verse 15. Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess His name. Verse 16. And do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Verse 17. Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you. Verse 18. Pray for us; we are convinced that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way. Verse 19. And I especially urge you to pray that I may be restored to you soon. Verse 20. Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, Verse 21. equip you with every good thing to do His will. And may He accomplish in us what is pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
