FIRST READING

Jeremiah 1:1-3, 11-19

Verse 1. These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Verse 2. The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah, Verse 3. and through the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, until the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile. Verse 11. And the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” “I see a branch of an almond tree,” I replied. Verse 12. “You have observed correctly,” said the LORD, “for I am watching over My word to accomplish it.” Verse 13. Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “What do you see?” “I see a boiling pot,” I replied, “and it is tilting toward us from the north.” Verse 14. Then the LORD said to me, “Disaster from the north will be poured out on all who live in the land. Verse 15. For I am about to summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north,” declares the LORD. “Their kings will come and set up their thrones at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem. They will attack all her surrounding walls and all the other cities of Judah. Verse 16. I will pronounce My judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they have forsaken Me, and they have burned incense to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands. Verse 17. Get yourself ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them, or I will terrify you before them. Verse 18. Now behold, this day I have made you like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land— against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. Verse 19. They will fight against you but will never overcome you, since I am with you to deliver you,” declares the LORD.

Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

Nehemiah 13:15-22

Verse 15. In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I warned them against selling food on that day. Verse 16. Additionally, men of Tyre who lived there were importing fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah in Jerusalem. Verse 17. Then I rebuked the nobles of Judah and asked, “What is this evil you are doing— profaning the Sabbath day? Verse 18. Did not your forefathers do the same things, so that our God brought all this disaster on us and on this city? And now you are rekindling His wrath against Israel by profaning the Sabbath!” Verse 19. When the evening shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem, just before the Sabbath, I ordered that the gates be shut and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my servants at the gates so that no load could enter on the Sabbath day. Verse 20. Once or twice, the merchants and those who sell all kinds of goods camped outside Jerusalem, Verse 21. but I warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they did not return on the Sabbath. Verse 22. Then I instructed the Levites to purify themselves and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me for this as well, O my God, and show me mercy according to Your abundant loving devotion.
