FIRST READING

Isaiah 24:1-13

Verse 1. Behold, the LORD lays waste the earth and leaves it in ruins. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants— Verse 2. people and priest alike, servant and master, maid and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor. Verse 3. The earth will be utterly laid waste and thoroughly plundered. Verse 4. The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and fades; the exalted of the earth waste away. Verse 5. The earth is defiled by its people; they have transgressed the laws; they have overstepped the decrees and broken the everlasting covenant. Verse 6. Therefore a curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers have been burned, and only a few survive. Verse 7. The new wine dries up, the vine withers. All the merrymakers now groan. Verse 8. The joyful tambourines have ceased; the noise of revelers has stopped; the joyful harp is silent. Verse 9. They no longer sing and drink wine; strong drink is bitter to those who consume it. Verse 10. The city of chaos is shattered; every house is closed to entry. Verse 11. In the streets they cry out for wine. All joy turns to gloom; rejoicing is exiled from the land. Verse 12. The city is left in ruins; its gate is reduced to rubble. Verse 13. So will it be on the earth and among the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest.

PSALM

Psalm 11

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. Of David. In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain!
Verse 2. For behold, the wicked bend their bows. They set their arrow on the string to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.
Verse 3. If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
Verse 4. The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His heavenly throne. His eyes are watching closely; they examine the sons of men.
Verse 5. The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked; His soul hates the lover of violence.
Verse 6. On the wicked He will rain down fiery coals and sulfur; a scorching wind will be their portion.
Verse 7. For the LORD is righteous; He loves justice. The upright will see His face.

FIRST READING

2 Chronicles 34:22-33

Verse 22. So Hilkiah and those the king had designated went and spoke to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District. Verse 23. And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you Verse 24. that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the curses written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah, Verse 25. because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be quenched.’ Verse 26. But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard, Verse 27. because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard His words against this place and against its people, and because you have humbled yourself before Me and have torn your clothes and wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD. Verse 28. ‘Now I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the calamity that I will bring on this place and on its people.’” So they brought her answer back to the king. Verse 29. Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. Verse 30. And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites— all the people great and small— and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD. Verse 31. So the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of the covenant that were written in this book. Verse 32. Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin take a stand in agreement to it. So all the people of Jerusalem carried out the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. Verse 33. And Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.

PSALM

Psalm 89:1-18

Verse 1. A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the loving devotion of the LORD forever; with my mouth I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations.
Verse 2. For I have said, “Loving devotion is built up forever; in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.”
Verse 3. You said, “I have made a covenant with My chosen one, I have sworn to David My servant:
Verse 4. ‘I will establish your offspring forever and build up your throne for all generations.’”
Verse 5. The heavens praise Your wonders, O LORD — Your faithfulness as well — in the assembly of the holy ones.
Verse 6. For who in the skies can compare with the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD?
Verse 7. In the council of the holy ones, God is greatly feared, and awesome above all who surround Him.
Verse 8. O LORD God of Hosts, who is like You? O mighty LORD, Your faithfulness surrounds You.
Verse 9. You rule the raging sea; when its waves mount up, You still them.
Verse 10. You crushed Rahab like a carcass; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.
Verse 11. The heavens are Yours, and also the earth. The earth and its fullness You founded.
Verse 12. North and south You created; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name.
Verse 13. Mighty is Your arm; strong is Your hand. Your right hand is exalted.
Verse 14. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; loving devotion and faithfulness go before You.
Verse 15. Blessed are those who know the joyful sound, who walk, O LORD, in the light of Your presence.
Verse 16. They rejoice in Your name all day long, and in Your righteousness they exult.
Verse 17. For You are the glory of their strength, and by Your favor our horn is exalted.
Verse 18. Surely our shield belongs to the LORD, and our king to the Holy One of Israel.

SECOND READING

Hebrews 11:17-28

Verse 17. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac on the altar. He who had received the promises was ready to offer his one and only son, Verse 18. even though God had said to him, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.” Verse 19. Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death. Verse 20. By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning the future. Verse 21. By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff. Verse 22. By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his bones. Verse 23. By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after his birth, because they saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were unafraid of the king’s edict. Verse 24. By faith Moses, when he was grown, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. Verse 25. He chose to suffer oppression with God’s people rather than to experience the fleeting enjoyment of sin. Verse 26. He valued disgrace for Christ above the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his reward. Verse 27. By faith Moses left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw Him who is invisible. Verse 28. By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch Israel’s own firstborn.
