Amos 4:6-13

Verse 6. “I afflicted all your cities with cleanness of teeth and all your towns with lack of bread, yet you did not return to Me,” Verse 7. “I also withheld the rain from you when the harvest was three months away. I sent rain on one city but withheld it from another. One field received rain; another without rain withered. Verse 8. People staggered from city to city for water to drink, but they were not satisfied; yet you did not return to Me,” Verse 9. “I struck you with blight and mildew in your growing gardens and vineyards; the locust devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you did not return to Me,” Verse 10. “I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp, yet you did not return to Me,” Verse 11. “Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze, yet you did not return to Me,” Verse 12. “Therefore, that is what I will do to you, O Israel, and since I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel! Verse 13. For behold, He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind and reveals His thoughts to man, who turns the dawn to darkness and strides on the heights of the earth— the LORD, the God of Hosts, is His name.”

PSALM

Psalm 7

Verse 1. A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning the words of Cush, a Benjamite. O LORD my God, I take refuge in You; save me and deliver me from all my pursuers,
Verse 2. or they will shred my soul like a lion and tear me to pieces with no one to rescue me.
Verse 3. O LORD my God, if I have done this, if injustice is on my hands,
Verse 4. if I have rewarded my ally with evil, if I have plundered my foe without cause,
Verse 5. then may my enemy pursue me and overtake me; may he trample me to the ground and leave my honor in the dust.
Verse 6. Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; rise up against the fury of my enemies. Awake, my God, and ordain judgment.
Verse 7. Let the assembled peoples gather around You; take Your seat over them on high.
Verse 8. The LORD judges the peoples; vindicate me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and integrity.
Verse 9. Put an end to the evil of the wicked, but establish the righteous, O righteous God who searches hearts and minds.
Verse 10. My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart.
Verse 11. God is a righteous judge and a God who feels indignation each day.
Verse 12. If one does not repent, God will sharpen His sword; He has bent and strung His bow.
Verse 13. He has prepared His deadly weapons; He ordains His arrows with fire.
Verse 14. Behold, the wicked man travails with evil; he conceives trouble and births falsehood.
Verse 15. He has dug a hole and hollowed it out; he has fallen into a pit of his own making.
Verse 16. His trouble recoils on himself, and his violence falls on his own head.
Verse 17. I will thank the LORD for His righteousness and sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

FIRST READING

Proverbs 19:1-17

Verse 1. Better a poor man who walks with integrity than a fool whose lips are perverse. Verse 2. Even zeal is no good without knowledge, and he who hurries his footsteps misses the mark. Verse 3. A man’s own folly subverts his way, yet his heart rages against the LORD. Verse 4. Wealth attracts many friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend. Verse 5. A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who utters lies will not escape. Verse 6. Many seek the favor of the prince, and everyone is a friend of the gift giver. Verse 7. All the brothers of a poor man hate him — how much more do his friends avoid him! He may pursue them with pleading, but they are nowhere to be found. Verse 8. He who acquires wisdom loves himself; one who safeguards understanding will find success. Verse 9. A false witness will not go unpunished, and one who pours out lies will perish. Verse 10. Luxury is unseemly for a fool— how much worse for a slave to rule over princes! Verse 11. A man’s insight gives him patience, and his virtue is to overlook an offense. Verse 12. A king’s rage is like the roar of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass. Verse 13. A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping. Verse 14. Houses and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. Verse 15. Laziness brings on deep sleep, and an idle soul will suffer hunger. Verse 16. He who keeps a commandment preserves his soul, but he who is careless in his ways will die. Verse 17. Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD, and He will repay the lender.

PSALM

Psalm 25:11-20

Verse 11. For the sake of Your name, O LORD, forgive my iniquity, for it is great.
Verse 12. Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the path chosen for him.
Verse 13. His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants will inherit the land.
Verse 14. The LORD confides in those who fear Him, and reveals His covenant to them.
Verse 15. My eyes are always on the LORD, for He will free my feet from the mesh.
Verse 16. Turn to me and be gracious, for I am lonely and afflicted.
Verse 17. The troubles of my heart increase; free me from my distress.
Verse 18. Consider my affliction and trouble, and take away all my sins.
Verse 19. Consider my enemies, for they are many, and they hate me with vicious hatred.
Verse 20. Guard my soul and deliver me; let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in You.

SECOND READING

1 John 3:11-17

Verse 11. This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. Verse 12. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did Cain slay him? Because his own deeds were evil, while those of his brother were righteous. Verse 13. So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you. Verse 14. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. The one who does not love remains in death. Verse 15. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer. Verse 16. By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. Verse 17. If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him?
