Semicontinuous (Track 1)

FIRST READING

2 Kings 9:30-37

Verse 30. Now when Jehu arrived in Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. So she painted her eyes, adorned her head, and looked down from a window. Verse 31. And as Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, O Zimri, murderer of your master?” Verse 32. He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” And two or three eunuchs looked down at him. Verse 33. “Throw her down!” yelled Jehu. So they threw her down, and her blood splattered on the wall and on the horses as they trampled her underfoot. Verse 34. Then Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of this cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was the daughter of a king.” Verse 35. But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing but her skull, her feet, and the palms of her hands. Verse 36. So they went back and told Jehu, who replied, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke through His servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘On the plot of ground at Jezreel the dogs will devour the flesh of Jezebel. Verse 37. And Jezebel’s body will lie like dung in the field on the plot of ground at Jezreel, so that no one can say: This is Jezebel.’ ”

PSALM

Psalm 59

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise against me.
Verse 2. Deliver me from workers of iniquity, and save me from men of bloodshed.
Verse 3. See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire against me for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD.
Verse 4. For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice.
Verse 5. O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to the wicked traitors.
Verse 6. They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.
Verse 7. See what they spew from their mouths— sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?”
Verse 8. But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations.
Verse 9. I will keep watch for You, O my strength, because You, O God, are my fortress.
Verse 10. My God of loving devotion will come to meet me; God will let me stare down my foes.
Verse 11. Do not kill them, or my people will forget. Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield.
Verse 12. By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, in the curses and lies they utter.
Verse 13. Consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, so it may be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob.
Verse 14. They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.
Verse 15. They scavenge for food, and growl if they are not satisfied.
Verse 16. But I will sing of Your strength and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning. For You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.
Verse 17. To You, O my strength, I sing praises, for You, O God, are my fortress, my God of loving devotion.

Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

Ezekiel 32:1-10

Verse 1. In the twelfth year, on the first day of the twelfth month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Verse 2. “Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: ‘You are like a lion among the nations; you are like a monster in the seas. You thrash about in your rivers, churning up the waters with your feet and muddying the streams.’ Verse 3. This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will spread My net over you with a company of many peoples, and they will draw you up in My net. Verse 4. I will abandon you on the land and hurl you into the open field. I will cause all the birds of the air to settle upon you, and all the beasts of the earth to eat their fill of you. Verse 5. I will put your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys with your remains. Verse 6. I will drench the land with the flow of your blood, all the way to the mountains — the ravines will be filled. Verse 7. When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will not give its light. Verse 8. All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you, and I will bring darkness upon your land,’ Verse 9. ‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries you do not know. Verse 10. I will cause many peoples to be appalled over you, and their kings will shudder in horror because of you when I brandish My sword before them. On the day of your downfall each of them will tremble every moment for his life.’

PSALM

Psalm 64

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
Verse 2. Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, from the mob of workers of iniquity,
Verse 3. who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows,
Verse 4. ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear.
Verse 5. They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say.
Verse 6. They devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious.
Verse 7. But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded.
Verse 8. They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads.
Verse 9. Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done.
Verse 10. Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult.

Luke 9:37-43a

Verse 37. The next day, when they came down from the mountain, Jesus was met by a large crowd. Verse 38. Suddenly a man in the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only child. Verse 39. A spirit keeps seizing him, and he screams abruptly. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It keeps mauling him and rarely departs from him. Verse 40. Bring your son here.” Verse 42. Even while the boy was approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. Verse 43. And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.
