FIRST READING

Proverbs 4:1-9

Verse 1. Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. Verse 2. For I give you sound teaching; do not abandon my directive. Verse 3. When I was a son to my father, tender and the only child of my mother, Verse 4. he taught me and said, “Let your heart lay hold of my words; keep my commands and you will live. Verse 5. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn from them. Verse 6. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will guard you. Verse 7. Wisdom is supreme; so acquire wisdom. And whatever you may acquire, gain understanding. Verse 8. Prize her, and she will exalt you; if you embrace her, she will honor you. Verse 9. She will set a garland of grace on your head; she will present you with a crown of beauty.”

PSALM

Psalm 8

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. A Psalm of David. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.
Verse 2. From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise on account of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and avenger.
Verse 3. When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place —
Verse 4. what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him?
Verse 5. You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor.
Verse 6. You made him ruler of the works of Your hands; You have placed everything under his feet:
Verse 7. all sheep and oxen, and even the beasts of the field,
Verse 8. the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
Verse 9. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!

SECOND READING

Luke 2:41-52

Verse 41. Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. Verse 42. And when He was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the Feast. Verse 43. When those days were over and they were returning home, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware He had stayed. Verse 44. Assuming He was in their company, they traveled on for a day before they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends. Verse 45. When they could not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for Him. Verse 46. Finally, after three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Verse 47. And all who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers. Verse 48. When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. “Child, why have You done this to us?” His mother asked. “Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.” Verse 49. “Why were you looking for Me?” He asked. “Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house ?” Verse 50. But they did not understand the statement He was making to them. Verse 51. Then He went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But His mother treasured up all these things in her heart. Verse 52. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
