FIRST READING

Exodus 33:18-23

Verse 18. Then Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.” Verse 19. “I will cause all My goodness to pass before you,” the LORD replied, “and I will proclaim My name — the LORD — in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” Verse 20. But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.” Verse 21. The LORD continued, “There is a place near Me where you are to stand upon a rock, Verse 22. and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. Verse 23. Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”

PSALM

Psalm 97

Verse 1. The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the distant shores be glad.
Verse 2. Clouds and darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are His throne’s foundation.
Verse 3. Fire goes before Him and consumes His foes on every side.
Verse 4. His lightning illuminates the world; the earth sees and trembles.
Verse 5. The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.
Verse 6. The heavens proclaim His righteousness; all the peoples see His glory.
Verse 7. All worshipers of images are put to shame — those who boast in idols. Worship Him, all you gods!
Verse 8. Zion hears and rejoices, and the towns of Judah exult because of Your judgments, O LORD.
Verse 9. For You, O LORD, are Most High over all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods.
Verse 10. Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Verse 11. Light shines on the righteous, gladness on the upright in heart.
Verse 12. Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous ones, and praise His holy name.

SECOND READING

John 1:14-18

Verse 14. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. Verse 15. John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying, “This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’” Verse 16. From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace. Verse 17. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Verse 18. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.
