FIRST READING

Ezekiel 20:39-44

Verse 39. And as for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD says: Go and serve your idols, every one of you. But afterward, you will surely listen to Me, and you will no longer defile My holy name with your gifts and idols. Verse 40. For on My holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, there the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve Me in the land. There I will accept them and will require your offerings and choice gifts, along with all your holy sacrifices. Verse 41. When I bring you from the peoples and gather you from the lands to which you have been scattered, I will accept you as a pleasing aroma. And I will show My holiness through you in the sight of the nations. Verse 42. Then you will know that I am the LORD, when I bring you into the land of Israel, the land that I swore to give your fathers. Verse 43. There you will remember your ways and all the deeds with which you have defiled yourselves, and you will loathe yourselves for all the evils you have done. Verse 44. Then you will know, O house of Israel, that I am the LORD, when I have dealt with you for the sake of My name and not according to your wicked ways and corrupt acts, declares the Lord GOD.”

PSALM

Psalm 23

Verse 1. A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Verse 2. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
Verse 3. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.
Verse 4. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Verse 5. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Verse 6. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

SECOND READING

Revelation 6:1-7:4

Verse 1. Then I watched as the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” Verse 2. So I looked and saw a white horse, and its rider held a bow. And he was given a crown, and he rode out to overcome and conquer. Verse 3. And when the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” Verse 4. Then another horse went forth. It was bright red, and its rider was granted permission to take away peace from the earth and to make men slay one another. And he was given a great sword. Verse 5. And when the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” Then I looked and saw a black horse, and its rider held in his hand a pair of scales. Verse 6. And I heard what sounded like a voice from among the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine.” Verse 7. And when the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” Verse 8. Then I looked and saw a pale green horse. Its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed close behind. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill by sword, by famine, by plague, and by the beasts of the earth. Verse 9. And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld. Verse 10. And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge those who dwell upon the earth and avenge our blood?” Verse 11. Then each of them was given a white robe and told to rest a little while longer until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers, were killed, just as they had been killed. Verse 12. And I watched as the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, and the whole moon turned blood red, Verse 13. and the stars of the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs dropping from a tree shaken by a great wind. Verse 14. The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place. Verse 15. Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. Verse 16. And they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. Verse 17. For the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?” Verse 1. After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back its four winds so that no wind would blow on land or sea or on any tree. Verse 2. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, with the seal of the living God. And he called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: Verse 3. “Do not harm the land or sea or trees until we have placed a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” Verse 4. And I heard the number of those who were sealed, 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel:
