FIRST READING

Isaiah 50:4-9a

Verse 4. The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship, to sustain the weary with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning; He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. Verse 5. The Lord GOD has opened My ears, and I have not been rebellious, nor have I turned back. Verse 6. I offered My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spittle. Verse 7. Because the Lord GOD helps Me, I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I will not be put to shame. Verse 8. The One who vindicates Me is near. Who will dare to contend with Me? Let us confront each other! Who has a case against Me? Let him approach Me! Verse 9. Surely the Lord GOD helps Me.

PSALM

Psalm 70

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. Of David. To bring remembrance. Make haste, O God, to deliver me! Hurry, O LORD, to help me!
Verse 2. May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded; may those who wish me harm be repelled and humiliated.
Verse 3. May those who say, “Aha, aha!” retreat because of their shame.
Verse 4. May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, “Let God be magnified!”
Verse 5. But I am poor and needy; hurry to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay.

SECOND READING

Hebrews 12:1-3

Verse 1. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Verse 2. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Verse 3. Consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

GOSPEL

John 13:21-32

Verse 21. After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and testified, “Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me.” Verse 22. The disciples looked at one another, perplexed as to which of them He meant. Verse 23. One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at His side. Verse 24. So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about. Verse 25. Leaning back against Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?” Verse 26. Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this morsel after I have dipped it.” Then He dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. Verse 27. And when Judas had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to Judas, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” Verse 28. But no one at the table knew why Jesus had said this to him. Verse 29. Since Judas kept the money bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast, or to give something to the poor. Verse 30. As soon as he had received the morsel, Judas went out into the night. Verse 31. When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. Verse 32. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify the Son in Himself — and will glorify Him at once.
