FIRST READING

Isaiah 42:1-9

Verse 1. “Here is My Servant, whom I uphold, My Chosen One, in whom My soul delights. I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will bring justice to the nations. Verse 2. He will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the streets. Verse 3. A bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice. Verse 4. He will not grow weak or discouraged before He has established justice on the earth. In His law the islands will put their hope.” Verse 5. This is what God the LORD says— He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its offspring, who gives breath to the people on it and life to those who walk in it: Verse 6. “I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations, Verse 7. to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of the dungeon and those sitting in darkness out from the prison house. Verse 8. I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols. Verse 9. Behold, the former things have happened, and now I declare new things. Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

PSALM

Psalm 36:5-11

Verse 5. Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds.
Verse 6. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains; Your judgments are like the deepest sea. O LORD, You preserve man and beast.
Verse 7. How precious is Your loving devotion, O God, that the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings!
Verse 8. They feast on the abundance of Your house, and You give them drink from Your river of delights.
Verse 9. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.
Verse 10. Extend Your loving devotion to those who know You, and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
Verse 11. Let not the foot of the proud come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.

SECOND READING

Hebrews 9:11-15

Verse 11. But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come, He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made by hands and is not a part of this creation. Verse 12. He did not enter by the blood of goats and calves, but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus securing eternal redemption. Verse 13. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that their bodies are clean, Verse 14. how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God! Verse 15. Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, now that He has died to redeem them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

GOSPEL

John 12:1-11

Verse 1. Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. Verse 2. So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him. Verse 3. Then Mary took about a pint of expensive perfume, made of pure nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Verse 4. But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was going to betray Him, asked, Verse 5. “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” Verse 6. Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. As keeper of the money bag, he used to take from what was put into it. Verse 7. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “She has kept this perfume in preparation for the day of My burial. Verse 8. The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have Me.” Verse 9. Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was there. And they came not only because of Him, but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. Verse 10. So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, Verse 11. for on account of him many of the Jews were deserting them and believing in Jesus.
