FIRST READING

Deuteronomy 26:1-11

Verse 1. When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and settle in it, Verse 2. you are to take some of the firstfruits of all your produce from the soil of the land that the LORD your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name, Verse 3. to the priest who is serving at that time, and say to him, “I declare today to the LORD your God that I have entered the land that the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.” Verse 4. Then the priest shall take the basket from your hands and place it before the altar of the LORD your God, Verse 5. and you are to declare before the LORD your God, “My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down to Egypt few in number and lived there and became a great nation, mighty and numerous. Verse 6. But the Egyptians mistreated us and afflicted us, putting us to hard labor. Verse 7. So we called out to the LORD, the God of our fathers; and the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, toil, and oppression. Verse 8. Then the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, signs, and wonders. Verse 9. And He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. Verse 10. And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land that You, O LORD, have given me.” Then you are to place the basket before the LORD your God and bow down before Him. Verse 11. So you shall rejoice — you, the Levite, and the foreigner dwelling among you — in all the good things the LORD your God has given to you and your household.

Verse 10. no evil will befall you, no plague will approach your tent.
Verse 11. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
Verse 12. They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
Verse 13. You will tread on the lion and cobra; you will trample the young lion and serpent.
Verse 14. “Because he loves Me, I will deliver him; because he knows My name, I will protect him.
Verse 15. When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him.
Verse 16. With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.”

SECOND READING

Romans 10:8b-13

Verse 8. But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: Verse 9. that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Verse 10. For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved. Verse 11. It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” Verse 12. For there is no difference between Jew and Greek: The same Lord is Lord of all, and gives richly to all who call on Him, Verse 13. for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

GOSPEL

Luke 4:1-13

Verse 1. Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Verse 2. where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry. Verse 3. The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Verse 4. But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ” Verse 5. Then the devil led Him up to a high place and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. Verse 6. “I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. Verse 7. So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.” Verse 8. But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’ ” Verse 9. Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here. Verse 10. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully, Verse 11. and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ” Verse 12. But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Verse 13. When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
