FIRST READING

Exodus 34:29-35

Verse 29. And when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was unaware that his face had become radiant from speaking with the LORD. Verse 30. Aaron and all the Israelites looked at Moses, and behold, his face was radiant. And they were afraid to approach him. Verse 31. But Moses called out to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them. Verse 32. And after this all the Israelites came near, and Moses commanded them to do everything that the LORD had told him on Mount Sinai. Verse 33. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. Verse 34. But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. And when he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded, Verse 35. and the Israelites would see that the face of Moses was radiant. So Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD.

PSALM

Psalm 99

Verse 1. The LORD reigns; let the nations tremble! He is enthroned above the cherubim; let the earth quake!
Verse 2. Great is the LORD in Zion; He is exalted above all the peoples.
Verse 3. Let them praise Your great and awesome name — He is holy!
Verse 4. The mighty King loves justice. You have established equity; You have exercised justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Verse 5. Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His footstool; He is holy!
Verse 6. Moses and Aaron were among His priests; Samuel was among those who called on His name. They called to the LORD and He answered.
Verse 7. He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud; they kept His decrees and the statutes He gave them.
Verse 8. O LORD our God, You answered them. You were a forgiving God to them, yet an avenger of their misdeeds.
Verse 9. Exalt the LORD our God and worship at His holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.

SECOND READING

2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2

Verse 12. Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. Verse 13. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at the end of what was fading away. Verse 14. But their minds were closed. For to this day the same veil remains at the reading of the old covenant. It has not been lifted, because only in Christ can it be removed. Verse 15. And even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. Verse 16. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Verse 17. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Verse 18. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. Verse 1. Therefore, since God in His mercy has given us this ministry, we do not lose heart. Verse 2. Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful ways. We do not practice deceit, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by open proclamation of the truth, we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

GOSPEL

Luke 9:28-36, (37-43a)

Verse 28. About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray. Verse 29. And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white. Verse 30. Suddenly two men, Moses and Elijah, began talking with Jesus. Verse 31. They appeared in glory and spoke about His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Verse 32. Meanwhile Peter and his companions were overcome by sleep, but when they awoke, they saw Jesus’ glory and the two men standing with Him. Verse 33. As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters — one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” ( vvv He did not know what he was saying.) Verse 34. While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. Verse 35. And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him!” Verse 36. After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was present with them. The disciples kept this to themselves, and in those days they did not tell anyone what they had seen. Verse 37. The next day, when they came down from the mountain, Jesus was met by a large crowd. Verse 38. Suddenly a man in the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only child. Verse 39. A spirit keeps seizing him, and he screams abruptly. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It keeps mauling him and rarely departs from him. Verse 40. I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.” Verse 41. “O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” Verse 42. Even while the boy was approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. Verse 43. And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.
