Psalm 115

Verse 1. Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name be the glory, because of Your loving devotion, because of Your faithfulness.
Verse 2. Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Verse 3. Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases.
Verse 4. Their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.
Verse 5. They have mouths, but cannot speak; they have eyes, but cannot see;
Verse 6. they have ears, but cannot hear; they have noses, but cannot smell;
Verse 7. they have hands, but cannot feel; they have feet, but cannot walk; they cannot even clear their throats.
Verse 8. Those who make them become like them, as do all who trust in them.
Verse 9. O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and shield.
Verse 10. O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and shield.
Verse 11. You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and shield.
Verse 12. The LORD is mindful of us; He will bless us. He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron;
Verse 13. He will bless those who fear the LORD— small and great alike.
Verse 14. May the LORD give you increase, both you and your children.
Verse 15. May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Verse 16. The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but the earth He has given to mankind.
Verse 17. It is not the dead who praise the LORD, nor any who descend into silence.
Verse 18. But it is we who will bless the LORD, both now and forevermore. Hallelujah!

SECOND READING

1 Timothy 3:1-9

Verse 1. This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task. Verse 2. An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, Verse 3. not dependent on wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, and free of the love of money. Verse 4. An overseer must manage his own household well and keep his children under control, with complete dignity. Verse 5. For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for the church of God? Verse 6. He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil. Verse 7. Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the snare of the devil. Verse 8. Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued or given to much wine or greedy for money. Verse 9. They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
