FIRST READING

Job 42:10-17

Verse 10. After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his prosperity and doubled his former possessions. Verse 11. All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came and dined with him in his house. They consoled him and comforted him over all the adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. And each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring. Verse 12. So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. Verse 13. And he also had seven sons and three daughters. Verse 14. He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch. Verse 15. No women as beautiful as Job’s daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance among their brothers. Verse 16. After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. Verse 17. And so Job died, old and full of years.

PSALM

Psalm 72

Verse 1. Of Solomon. Endow the king with Your justice, O God, and the son of the king with Your righteousness.
Verse 2. May he judge Your people with righteousness and Your afflicted with justice.
Verse 3. May the mountains bring peace to the people, and the hills bring righteousness.
Verse 4. May he vindicate the afflicted among the people; may he save the children of the needy and crush the oppressor.
Verse 5. May they fear him as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon remains, through all generations.
Verse 6. May he be like rain that falls on freshly cut grass, like spring showers that water the earth.
Verse 7. May the righteous flourish in his days and prosperity abound until the moon is no more.
Verse 8. May he rule from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.
Verse 9. May the nomads bow before him, and his enemies lick the dust.
Verse 10. May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts.
Verse 11. May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.
Verse 12. For he will deliver the needy who cry out and the afflicted who have no helper.
Verse 13. He will take pity on the poor and needy and save the lives of the oppressed.
Verse 14. He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for their blood is precious in his sight.
Verse 15. Long may he live! May gold from Sheba be given him. May people ever pray for him; may they bless him all day long.
Verse 16. May there be an abundance of grain in the land; may it sway atop the hills. May its fruit trees flourish like the forests of Lebanon, the people of its cities like the grass of the field.
Verse 17. May his name endure forever; may his name continue as long as the sun shines. In him may all nations be blessed; may they call him blessed.
Verse 18. Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.
Verse 19. And blessed be His glorious name forever; may all the earth be filled with His glory. Amen and amen.
Verse 20. Thus conclude the prayers of David son of Jesse.

SECOND READING

Luke 8:16-21

Verse 16. No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he sets it on a stand, so those who enter can see the light. Verse 17. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light. Verse 18. Pay attention, therefore, to how you listen. Whoever has will be given more, but whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” Verse 19. Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him, but they were unable to reach Him because of the crowd. Verse 20. He was told, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.” Verse 21. But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and carry it out.”
