FIRST READING

1 Kings 8:22-30

Verse 22. Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven, Verse 23. and said: “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth below, keeping Your covenant of loving devotion with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts. Verse 24. You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David. What You spoke with Your mouth You have fulfilled with Your hand this day. Verse 25. Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk before Me as you have done.’ Verse 26. And now, O God of Israel, please confirm what You promised to Your servant, my father David. Verse 27. But will God indeed dwell upon the earth? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built. Verse 28. Yet regard the prayer and plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying before You today. Verse 29. May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place. Verse 30. Hear the plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward this place. May You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. May You hear and forgive.

Psalm 3

A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom. O LORD, how my foes have increased! How many rise up against me!

Many say of me, “God will not deliver him.”

But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.

To the LORD I cry aloud, and He answers me from His holy mountain.

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains me.

I will not fear the myriads set against me on every side.

Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked.

Salvation belongs to the LORD; may Your blessing be on Your people.

Psalm 13

For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?

How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me?

Consider me and respond, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death,

lest my enemy say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes rejoice when I fall.

But I have trusted in Your loving devotion; my heart will rejoice in Your salvation.

I will sing to the LORD, for He has been good to me.

SECOND READING

Mark 13:9-23

Verse 9. So be on your guard. You will be delivered over to the councils and beaten in the synagogues. On My account you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. Verse 10. And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations. Verse 11. But when they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand what to say. Instead, speak whatever you are given at that time, for it will not be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. Verse 12. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against their parents and have them put to death. Verse 13. You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. Verse 14. So when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Verse 15. Let no one on the housetop go back inside to retrieve anything from his house. Verse 16. And let no one in the field return for his cloak. Verse 17. How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers! Verse 18. Pray that this will not occur in the winter. Verse 19. For those will be days of tribulation unseen from the beginning of God’s creation until now, and never to be seen again. Verse 20. If the Lord had not cut short those days, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has cut them short. Verse 21. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it. Verse 22. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive even the elect, if that were possible. Verse 23. So be on your guard; I have told you everything in advance.
