Semicontinuous (Track 1)

FIRST READING

1 Samuel 2:1-10

Verse 1. At that time Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation. Verse 2. There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God. Verse 3. Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are weighed. Verse 4. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are equipped with strength. Verse 5. The well-fed hire themselves out for food, but the starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away. Verse 6. The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up. Verse 7. The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts. Verse 8. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world. Verse 9. He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail. Verse 10. Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will exalt the horn of His anointed.”

Daniel 4:28-37

Verse 28. All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. Verse 29. Twelve months later, as he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, Verse 30. the king exclaimed, “Is this not Babylon the Great, which I myself have built as a royal residence by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?” Verse 31. While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven: “It is decreed to you, King Nebuchadnezzar, that the kingdom has departed from you. Verse 32. You will be driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.” Verse 33. At that moment the sentence against Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from mankind. He ate grass like an ox, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird. Verse 34. But at the end of those days I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven, and my sanity was restored to me. Then I praised the Most High, and I honored and glorified Him who lives forever: “For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation. Verse 35. All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’” Verse 36. At the same time my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne, and surpassing greatness was added to me. Verse 37. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, for all His works are true and all His ways are just. And He is able to humble those who walk in pride.

1 Samuel 3:1-18

Verse 1. And the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. Now in those days the word of the LORD was rare, and visions were scarce. Verse 2. And at that time Eli, whose eyesight had grown so dim that he could not see, was lying in his room. Verse 3. Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was located. Verse 4. Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.” Verse 5. He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. Verse 6. Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” Verse 7. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, because the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. Verse 8. Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” Then Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy. Verse 9. “Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Verse 10. Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” Verse 11. Then the LORD said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel at which the ears of all who hear it will tingle. Verse 12. On that day I will carry out against Eli everything I have spoken about his house, from beginning to end. Verse 13. I told him that I would judge his house forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons blasphemed God and he did not restrain them. Verse 14. Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, ‘The iniquity of Eli’s house shall never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’” Verse 15. Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, Verse 16. but Eli called to him and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” answered Samuel. Verse 17. “What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God punish you, and ever so severely, if you hide from me anything He said to you.” Verse 18. So Samuel told him everything and did not hide a thing from him. “He is the LORD,” replied Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”

Mark 12:1-12

Verse 1. Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a wine vat, and built a watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey. Verse 2. At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. Verse 3. But they seized the servant, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. Verse 4. Then he sent them another servant, and they struck him over the head and treated him shamefully. Verse 5. He sent still another, and this one they killed. He sent many others; some they beat and others they killed. Verse 6. Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. Verse 7. But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ Verse 8. So they seized the son, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. Verse 9. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. Verse 10. Have you never read this Scripture: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Verse 11. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’ ?” Verse 12. At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
