Semicontinuous (Track 1)

FIRST READING

Proverbs 22:1-21

Verse 1. A good name is more desirable than great riches; favor is better than silver and gold. Verse 2. The rich and the poor have this in common: The LORD is Maker of them all. Verse 3. The prudent see danger and take cover, but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences. Verse 4. The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life. Verse 5. Thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse; he who guards his soul stays far from them. Verse 6. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Verse 7. The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. Verse 8. He who sows injustice will reap disaster, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed. Verse 9. A generous man will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. Verse 10. Drive out the mocker, and conflict will depart; even quarreling and insults will cease. Verse 11. He who loves a pure heart and gracious lips will have the king for a friend. Verse 12. The LORD’s eyes keep watch over knowledge, but He frustrates the words of the faithless. Verse 13. The slacker says, “There is a lion outside! I will be slain in the streets!” Verse 14. The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit; he who is under the wrath of the LORD will fall into it. Verse 15. Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him. Verse 16. Oppressing the poor to enrich oneself or giving gifts to the rich will surely lead to poverty. Verse 17. Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise — apply your mind to my knowledge — Verse 18. for it is pleasing when you keep them within you and they are constantly on your lips. Verse 19. So that your trust may be in the LORD, I instruct you today — yes, you. Verse 20. Have I not written for you thirty sayings about counsel and knowledge, Verse 21. to show you true and reliable words, that you may soundly answer those who sent you?

PSALM

Psalm 73:21-28

Verse 21. When my heart was grieved and I was pierced within,
Verse 22. I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before You.
Verse 23. Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand.
Verse 24. You guide me with Your counsel, and later receive me in glory.
Verse 25. Whom have I in heaven but You? And on earth I desire no one besides You.
Verse 26. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Verse 27. Those far from You will surely perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You.
Verse 28. But as for me, it is good to draw near to God. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may proclaim all Your works.

Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

1 Kings 13:1-10

Verse 1. Suddenly, as Jeroboam was standing beside the altar to burn incense, there came a man of God from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD. Verse 2. And he cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD, “O altar, O altar, this is what the LORD says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David, and upon you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and human bones will be burned upon you.’” Verse 3. That day the man of God gave a sign, saying, “The LORD has spoken this sign: ‘Surely the altar will be split apart, and the ashes upon it will be poured out.’” Verse 4. Now when King Jeroboam, who was at the altar in Bethel, heard the word that the man of God had cried out against it, he stretched out his hand and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward him withered, so that he could not pull it back. Verse 5. And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. Verse 6. Then the king responded to the man of God, “Intercede with the LORD your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him as it was before. Verse 7. Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.” Verse 8. But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place. Verse 9. For this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’” Verse 10. So the man of God went another way and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.

PSALM

Psalm 119:169-176

Verse 169. May my cry come before You, O LORD; give me understanding according to Your word.
Verse 170. May my plea come before You; rescue me according to Your promise.
Verse 171. My lips pour forth praise, for You teach me Your statutes.
Verse 172. My tongue sings of Your word, for all Your commandments are righteous.
Verse 173. May Your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen Your precepts.
Verse 174. I long for Your salvation, O LORD, and Your law is my delight.
Verse 175. Let me live to praise You; may Your judgments sustain me.
Verse 176. I have strayed like a lost sheep; seek Your servant, for I have not forgotten Your commandments.

SECOND READING

Romans 3:9-20

Verse 9. What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin. Verse 10. As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one. Verse 11. There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. Verse 12. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” Verse 13. “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The venom of vipers is on their lips.” Verse 14. “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” Verse 15. “Their feet are swift to shed blood; Verse 16. ruin and misery lie in their wake, Verse 17. and the way of peace they have not known.” Verse 18. “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Verse 19. Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Verse 20. Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin.
