Semicontinuous (Track 1)

FIRST READING

1 Kings 5:1-12

Verse 1. Now when Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king in his father’s place, he sent envoys to Solomon; for Hiram had always been a friend of David. Verse 2. And Solomon relayed this message to Hiram: Verse 3. “As you are well aware, due to the wars waged on all sides against my father David, he could not build a house for the Name of the LORD his God until the LORD had put his enemies under his feet. Verse 4. But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or crisis. Verse 5. So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God, according to what the LORD said to my father David: ‘I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the house for My Name.’ Verse 6. Now therefore, order that cedars of Lebanon be cut down for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants whatever wages you set, for you know that there are none among us as skilled in logging as the Sidonians.” Verse 7. When Hiram received Solomon’s message, he rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the LORD this day! He has given David a wise son over this great people!” Verse 8. Then Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying: “I have received your message; I will do all you desire regarding the cedar and cypress timber. Verse 9. My servants will haul the logs from Lebanon to the Sea, and I will float them as rafts by sea to the place you specify. There I will separate the logs, and you can take them away. And in exchange, you can meet my needs by providing my household with food.” Verse 10. So Hiram provided Solomon with all the cedar and cypress timber he wanted, Verse 11. and year after year Solomon would provide Hiram with 20,000 cors of wheat as food for his household, as well as 20,000 baths of pure olive oil. Verse 12. And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him. There was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.

PSALM

Psalm 84

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. How lovely is Your dwelling place, O LORD of Hosts!
Verse 2. My soul longs, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Verse 3. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she places her young near Your altars, O LORD of Hosts, my King and my God.
Verse 4. How blessed are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever praising You.
Verse 5. Blessed are those whose strength is in You, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
Verse 6. As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; even the autumn rain covers it with pools.
Verse 7. They go from strength to strength, until each appears before God in Zion.
Verse 8. O LORD God of Hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob.
Verse 9. Take notice of our shield, O God, and look with favor on the face of Your anointed.
Verse 10. For better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
Verse 11. For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD gives grace and glory; He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.
Verse 12. O LORD of Hosts, how blessed is the man who trusts in You!

Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

Joshua 22:21-34

Verse 21. Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered the leaders of the clans of Israel: Verse 22. “The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! He knows, and may Israel also know. If this was in rebellion or breach of faith against the LORD, do not spare us today. Verse 23. If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice peace offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable. Verse 24. But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel? Verse 25. For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no share in the LORD!’ So your descendants could cause ours to stop fearing the LORD. Verse 26. That is why we said, ‘Let us take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices. Verse 27. Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’ Verse 28. Therefore we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the altar of the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’ Verse 29. Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle.” Verse 30. When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation — the heads of Israel’s clans who were with him — heard what the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied. Verse 31. Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “Today we know that the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him. Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.” Verse 32. Then Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, together with the other leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of Canaan and brought back a report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of Gilead. Verse 33. The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived. Verse 34. So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”

Verse 21. Evil will slay the wicked, and the haters of the righteous will be condemned.
Verse 22. The LORD redeems His servants, and none who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

SECOND READING

Luke 11:5-13

Verse 5. Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose one of you goes to his friend at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, Verse 6. because a friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him.’ Verse 7. And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Do not bother me. My door is already shut, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ Verse 8. I tell you, even though he will not get up to provide for him because of his friendship, yet because of the man’s persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs. Verse 9. So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. Verse 10. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Verse 11. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Verse 12. Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? Verse 13. So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
