Semicontinuous (Track 1)

FIRST READING

1 Kings 8:1-21

Verse 1. At that time Solomon assembled before him in Jerusalem the elders of Israel — all the tribal heads and family leaders of the Israelites — to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Zion, the City of David. Verse 2. And all the men of Israel came together to King Solomon at the feast in the seventh month, the month of Ethanim. Verse 3. When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the ark, Verse 4. and they brought up the ark of the LORD and the Tent of Meeting with all its sacred furnishings. So the priests and Levites carried them up. Verse 5. There, before the ark, King Solomon and the whole congregation of Israel who had assembled with him sacrificed so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered. Verse 6. Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, beneath the wings of the cherubim. Verse 7. For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed the ark and its poles. Verse 8. The poles extended far enough that their ends were visible from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are there to this day. Verse 9. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the LORD had made a covenant with the Israelites after they had come out of the land of Egypt. Verse 10. And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD Verse 11. so that the priests could not stand there to minister because of the cloud. For the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD. Verse 12. Then Solomon declared: “The LORD has said that He would dwell in the thick cloud. Verse 13. I have indeed built You an exalted house, a place for You to dwell forever.” Verse 14. And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there, the king turned around and blessed them all Verse 15. and said: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has fulfilled with His own hand what He spoke with His mouth to my father David, saying, Verse 16. ‘Since the day I brought My people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house so that My Name would be there. But I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’ Verse 17. Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel. Verse 18. But the LORD said to my father David, ‘Since it was in your heart to build a house for My Name, you have done well to have this in your heart. Verse 19. Nevertheless, you are not the one to build it; but your son, your own offspring, will build the house for My Name.’ Verse 20. Now the LORD has fulfilled the word that He spoke. I have succeeded my father David, and I sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised. I have built the house for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel. Verse 21. And there I have provided a place for the ark, which contains the covenant of the LORD that He made with our fathers when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.”

PSALM

Psalm 101

Verse 1. A Psalm of David. I will sing of Your loving devotion and justice; to You, O LORD, I will sing praises.
Verse 2. I will ponder the way that is blameless — when will You come to me? I will walk in my house with integrity of heart.
Verse 3. I will set no worthless thing before my eyes. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.
Verse 4. A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know nothing of evil.
Verse 5. Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, I will put to silence; the one with haughty eyes and a proud heart, I will not endure.
Verse 6. My eyes favor the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in the way of integrity shall minister to me.
Verse 7. No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who tells lies shall stand in my presence.
Verse 8. Every morning I will remove all the wicked of the land, that I may cut off every evildoer from the city of the LORD.

FIRST READING

Genesis 47:13-26

Verse 13. There was no food, however, in all that region, because the famine was so severe; the lands of Egypt and Canaan had been exhausted by the famine. Verse 14. Joseph collected all the money to be found in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan in exchange for the grain they were buying, and he brought it into Pharaoh’s palace. Verse 15. When the money from the lands of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? For our funds have run out!” Verse 16. “Then bring me your livestock,” said Joseph. “Since the money is gone, I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock.” Verse 17. So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their flocks and herds, and their donkeys. Throughout that year he provided them with food in exchange for all their livestock. Verse 18. When that year was over, they came to him the second year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord that our money is gone and all our livestock belongs to you. There is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. Verse 19. Why should we perish before your eyes— we and our land as well? Purchase us and our land in exchange for food. Then we, along with our land, will be slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.” Verse 20. So Joseph acquired for Pharaoh all the land in Egypt; the Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields because the famine was so severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s, Verse 21. and Joseph reduced the people to servitude from one end of Egypt to the other. Verse 22. However, he did not acquire the priests’ portion of the land, for it had been given to them by Pharaoh. They ate the rations that Pharaoh supplied; so they did not sell their land. Verse 23. Then Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh this day, here is seed for you to sow in the land. Verse 24. At harvest time, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh, and four-fifths will be yours as seed for the field and food for yourselves and your households and children.” Verse 25. “You have saved our lives,” they said. “We have found favor in our lord’s eyes, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.” Verse 26. So Joseph established a law that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh, and it is in effect in the land of Egypt to this day. Only the priests’ land does not belong to Pharaoh.

PSALM

Psalm 36

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD. An oracle is in my heart regarding the transgression of the wicked man: There is no fear of God before his eyes.
Verse 2. For his eyes are too full of conceit to detect or hate his own sin.
Verse 3. The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful; he has ceased to be wise and well-doing.
Verse 4. Even on his bed he plots wickedness; he sets himself on a path that is not good; he fails to reject evil.
Verse 5. Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds.
Verse 6. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains; Your judgments are like the deepest sea. O LORD, You preserve man and beast.
Verse 7. How precious is Your loving devotion, O God, that the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings!
Verse 8. They feast on the abundance of Your house, and You give them drink from Your river of delights.
Verse 9. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.
Verse 10. Extend Your loving devotion to those who know You, and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
Verse 11. Let not the foot of the proud come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
Verse 12. There the evildoers lie fallen, thrown down and unable to rise.

SECOND READING

Mark 8:14-21

Verse 14. Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. Verse 15. “Watch out!” He cautioned them. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod.” Verse 16. So they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. Verse 17. Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them, “Why are you debating about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Do you have such hard hearts? Verse 18. ‘Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?’ And do you not remember? Verse 19. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Twelve,” they answered. Verse 20. “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Seven,” they said. Verse 21. Then He asked them, “Do you still not understand?”
