FIRST READING

1 Kings 3:16-28

Verse 16. At that time two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. Verse 17. One woman said, “Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth while she was in the house. Verse 18. On the third day after I gave birth, this woman also had a baby. We were alone, with no one in the house but the two of us. Verse 19. During the night this woman’s son died because she rolled over on him. Verse 20. So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I was asleep. She laid him in her bosom and put her dead son at my bosom. Verse 21. The next morning, when I got up to nurse my son, I discovered he was dead. But when I examined him, I realized that he was not the son I had borne.” Verse 22. “No,” said the other woman, “the living one is my son and the dead one is your son.” But the first woman insisted, “No, the dead one is yours and the living one is mine.” So they argued before the king. Verse 23. Then the king replied, “This woman says, ‘My son is alive and yours is dead,’ but that woman says, ‘No, your son is dead and mine is alive.’” Verse 24. The king continued, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought him a sword, Verse 25. and the king declared, “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.” Verse 26. Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she yearned with compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living baby. Do not kill him!” But the other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!” Verse 27. Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. By no means should you kill him; she is his mother.” Verse 28. When all Israel heard of the judgment the king had given, they stood in awe of him, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.

Verse 1. A Psalm of David. I will sing of Your loving devotion and justice; to You, O LORD, I will sing praises.
Verse 2. I will ponder the way that is blameless — when will You come to me? I will walk in my house with integrity of heart.
Verse 3. I will set no worthless thing before my eyes. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.
Verse 4. A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know nothing of evil.
Verse 5. Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, I will put to silence; the one with haughty eyes and a proud heart, I will not endure.
Verse 6. My eyes favor the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in the way of integrity shall minister to me.
Verse 7. No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who tells lies shall stand in my presence.
Verse 8. Every morning I will remove all the wicked of the land, that I may cut off every evildoer from the city of the LORD.

Complementary (Track 2)

FIRST READING

Genesis 43:1-15

Verse 1. Now the famine was still severe in the land. Verse 2. So when Jacob’s sons had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.” Verse 3. But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’ Verse 4. If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you. Verse 5. But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’” Verse 6. “Why did you bring this trouble upon me?” Israel asked. “Why did you tell the man you had another brother?” Verse 7. They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?” Verse 8. And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me, and we will go at once, so that we may live and not die— neither we, nor you, nor our children. Verse 9. I will guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life. Verse 10. If we had not delayed, we could have come and gone twice by now.” Verse 11. Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your packs and carry them down as a gift for the man — a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachios and almonds. Verse 12. Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake. Verse 13. Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once. Verse 14. May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother along with Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.” Verse 15. So the men took these gifts, along with double the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well. Then they hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

PSALM

Psalm 36

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD. An oracle is in my heart regarding the transgression of the wicked man: There is no fear of God before his eyes.
Verse 2. For his eyes are too full of conceit to detect or hate his own sin.
Verse 3. The words of his mouth are wicked and deceitful; he has ceased to be wise and well-doing.

Verse 5. Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds.
Verse 6. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains; Your judgments are like the deepest sea. O LORD, You preserve man and beast.
Verse 7. How precious is Your loving devotion, O God, that the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings!
Verse 8. They feast on the abundance of Your house, and You give them drink from Your river of delights.
Verse 9. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.
Verse 10. Extend Your loving devotion to those who know You, and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
Verse 11. Let not the foot of the proud come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
Verse 12. There the evildoers lie fallen, thrown down and unable to rise.

SECOND READING

Acts 6:1-7

Verse 1. In those days when the disciples were increasing in number, the Grecian Jews among them began to grumble against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. Verse 2. So the Twelve summoned all the disciples and said, “It is unacceptable for us to neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables. Verse 3. Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will assign this responsibility to them Verse 4. and will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” Verse 5. This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, as well as Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. Verse 6. They presented these seven to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. Verse 7. So the word of God continued to spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem grew rapidly, and a great number of priests became obedient to the faith.
