Semicontinuous (Track 1)

FIRST READING

1 Samuel 31:1-13

Verse 1. Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboa. Verse 2. The Philistines hotly pursued Saul and his sons, and they killed Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. Verse 3. When the battle intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him critically. Verse 4. Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised men will come and run me through and torture me!” But his armor-bearer was terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. Verse 5. When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died with him. Verse 6. So Saul, his three sons, his armor-bearer, and all his men died together that same day. Verse 7. When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities. Verse 8. The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. Verse 9. They cut off Saul’s head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temples of their idols and among their people. Verse 10. They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and hung his body on the wall of Beth-shan. Verse 11. When the people of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, Verse 12. all their men of valor set out, journeyed all night, and retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at Jabesh, they burned the bodies there. Verse 13. Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

Leviticus 15:19-31

Verse 19. When a woman has a discharge consisting of blood from her body, she will be unclean due to her menstruation for seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean until evening. Verse 20. Anything on which she lies or sits during her menstruation will be unclean, Verse 21. and anyone who touches her bed must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening. Verse 22. Whoever touches any furniture on which she was sitting must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening. Verse 23. And whether it is a bed or furniture on which she was sitting, whoever touches it will be unclean until evening. Verse 24. If a man lies with her and her menstrual flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days, and any bed on which he lies will become unclean. Verse 25. When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days at a time other than her menstrual period, or if it continues beyond her period, she will be unclean all the days of her unclean discharge, just as she is during the days of her menstruation. Verse 26. Any bed on which she lies or any furniture on which she sits during the days of her discharge will be unclean, like her bed during her menstrual period. Verse 27. Anyone who touches these things will be unclean; he must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening. Verse 28. When a woman is cleansed of her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be ceremonially clean. Verse 29. On the eighth day she is to take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. Verse 30. The priest is to sacrifice one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her before the LORD for her unclean discharge. Verse 31. You must keep the children of Israel separate from their uncleanness, so that they do not die by defiling My tabernacle, which is among them.

SECOND READING

2 Corinthians 9:1-5

Verse 1. Now about the service to the saints, there is no need for me to write to you. Verse 2. For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting to the Macedonians that since last year you in Achaia were prepared to give. And your zeal has stirred most of them to do likewise. Verse 3. But I am sending the brothers in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove empty, but that you will be prepared, just as I said. Verse 4. Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we — to say nothing of you — would be ashamed of having been so confident. Verse 5. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you beforehand and make arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. This way, your gift will be prepared generously and not begrudgingly.
