FIRST READING
Isaiah 1:1-4, 16-20
Verse 1. This is the vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Verse 2. Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I have raised children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me. Verse 3. The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger, but Israel does not know; My people do not understand.” Verse 4. Alas, O sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a brood of evildoers, children who act corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD; they have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on Him. Verse 16. Wash and cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil! Verse 17. Learn to do right; seek justice and correct the oppressor. Defend the fatherless and plead the case of the widow.” Verse 18. “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will become like wool. Verse 19. If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best of the land. Verse 20. But if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.”
PSALM
Psalm 29
SECOND READING
Romans 8:1-8
Verse 1. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Verse 2. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. Verse 3. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, Verse 4. so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Verse 5. Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. Verse 6. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, Verse 7. because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Verse 8. Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.
