FIRST READING

Song of Solomon 3:1-11

Verse 1. On my bed at night I sought the one I love; I sought him, but did not find him. Verse 2. I will arise now and go about the city, through the streets and squares. I will seek the one I love. So I sought him but did not find him. Verse 3. I encountered the watchmen on their rounds of the city: “Have you seen the one I love?” Verse 4. I had just passed them when I found the one I love. I held him and would not let go until I had brought him to my mother’s house, to the chamber of the one who conceived me. Verse 5. O daughters of Jerusalem, I adjure you by the gazelles and does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until the time is right. Verse 6. Who is this coming up from the wilderness like a column of smoke, scented with myrrh and frankincense from all the spices of the merchant? Verse 7. Behold, it is Solomon’s carriage, escorted by sixty of the mightiest men of Israel. Verse 8. All are skilled with the sword, experienced in warfare. Each has his sword at his side prepared for the terror of the night. Verse 9. King Solomon has made his carriage out of the timber of Lebanon. Verse 10. He has made its posts of silver, its base of gold, its seat of purple fabric. Its interior is inlaid with love by the daughters of Jerusalem. Verse 11. Come out, O daughters of Zion, and gaze at King Solomon, wearing the crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding— the day of his heart’s rejoicing.

SECOND READING

Mark 16:1-8

Verse 1. When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go and anoint the body of Jesus. Verse 2. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb. Verse 3. They were asking one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb?” Verse 4. But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, even though it was extremely large. Verse 5. When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. Verse 6. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here! See the place where they put Him. Verse 7. But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him, just as He told you.’” Verse 8. So the women left the tomb and ran away, trembling and bewildered. And in their fear they did not say a word to anyone.
