FIRST READING

2 Chronicles 29:1-11, 16-19

Verse 1. Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. Verse 2. And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done. Verse 3. In the first month of the first year of his reign, Hezekiah opened and repaired the doors of the house of the LORD. Verse 4. Then he brought in the priests and Levites and gathered them in the square on the east side. Verse 5. “Listen to me, O Levites,” he said. “Consecrate yourselves now and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers. Remove from the Holy Place every impurity. Verse 6. For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him. Verse 7. They also shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps. They did not burn incense or present burnt offerings in the Holy Place of the God of Israel. Verse 8. Therefore, the wrath of the LORD has fallen upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror, horror, and scorn, as you can see with your own eyes. Verse 9. For behold, this is why our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and daughters and wives are in captivity. Verse 10. Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD, the God of Israel, so that His fierce anger will turn away from us. Verse 11. Now, my sons, do not be negligent, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, to minister before Him, and to burn incense.” Verse 16. So the priests went inside the house of the LORD to cleanse it, and they brought out to the courtyard all the unclean things that they found in the temple of the LORD. Then the Levites took these things and carried them out to the Kidron Valley. Verse 17. They began the consecration on the first day of the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they reached the portico of the LORD. For eight more days they consecrated the house of the LORD itself, finishing on the sixteenth day of the first month. Verse 18. Then they went in to King Hezekiah and reported, “We have cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the showbread with all its utensils. Verse 19. Moreover, we have prepared and consecrated all the articles that King Ahaz in his unfaithfulness cast aside during his reign. They are now in front of the altar of the LORD.”

PSALM

Psalm 84

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. How lovely is Your dwelling place, O LORD of Hosts!
Verse 2. My soul longs, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Verse 3. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she places her young near Your altars, O LORD of Hosts, my King and my God.
Verse 4. How blessed are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever praising You.
Verse 5. Blessed are those whose strength is in You, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
Verse 6. As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; even the autumn rain covers it with pools.
Verse 7. They go from strength to strength, until each appears before God in Zion.
Verse 8. O LORD God of Hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob.
Verse 9. Take notice of our shield, O God, and look with favor on the face of Your anointed.
Verse 10. For better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
Verse 11. For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD gives grace and glory; He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.
Verse 12. O LORD of Hosts, how blessed is the man who trusts in You!

SECOND READING

Hebrews 9:23-28

Verse 23. So it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. Verse 24. For Christ did not enter a man-made copy of the true sanctuary, but He entered heaven itself, now to appear on our behalf in the presence of God. Verse 25. Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Verse 26. Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Verse 27. Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment, Verse 28. so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him.
