FIRST READING
Exodus 20:1-17
Verse 1. And God spoke all these words: Verse 2. “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. Verse 3. You shall have no other gods before Me. Verse 4. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. Verse 5. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, Verse 6. but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. Verse 7. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain. Verse 8. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Verse 9. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, Verse 10. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do any work— neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant or livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates. Verse 11. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. Verse 12. Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. Verse 13. You shall not murder. Verse 14. You shall not commit adultery. Verse 15. You shall not steal. Verse 16. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Verse 17. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, or his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
PSALM
Psalm 19
SECOND READING
1 Corinthians 1:18-25
Verse 18. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Verse 19. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” Verse 20. Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? Verse 21. For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Verse 22. Jews demand signs and Greeks search for wisdom, Verse 23. but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, Verse 24. but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Verse 25. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.
GOSPEL
John 2:13-22
Verse 13. When the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Verse 14. In the temple courts He found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated at their tables. Verse 15. So He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. Verse 16. To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!” Verse 17. His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.” Verse 18. On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?” Verse 19. Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” Verse 20. “This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?” Verse 21. But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body. Verse 22. After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
