FIRST READING
Deuteronomy 13:1-5
Verse 1. If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you, Verse 2. and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about, but he says, “Let us follow other gods (which you have not known) and let us worship them,” Verse 3. you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and with all your soul. Verse 4. You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him. Keep His commandments and listen to His voice; serve Him and hold fast to Him. Verse 5. Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he has advocated rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way in which the LORD your God has commanded you to walk. So you must purge the evil from among you.

SECOND READING
Matthew 8:28-9:1
Verse 28. When Jesus arrived on the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, He was met by two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. Verse 29. “What do You want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Verse 30. In the distance a large herd of pigs was feeding. Verse 31. So the demons begged Jesus, “If You drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” Verse 32. “Go!” He told them. So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and died in the waters. Verse 33. Those tending the pigs ran off into the town and reported all this, including the account of the demon-possessed men. Verse 34. Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their region. Verse 1. Jesus got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own town.
