FIRST READING
Genesis 12:1-9
Verse 1. Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. Verse 2. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. Verse 3. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you. ” Verse 4. So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Verse 5. And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Verse 6. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the Oak of Moreh at Shechem. And at that time the Canaanites were in the land. Verse 7. Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring. ” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. Verse 8. From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built an altar to the LORD, and he called on the name of the LORD. Verse 9. And Abram journeyed on toward the Negev.

SECOND READING
1 Corinthians 7:17-24
Verse 17. Regardless, each one should lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is what I prescribe in all the churches. Verse 18. Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man still uncircumcised when called? He should not be circumcised. Verse 19. Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commandments is what counts. Verse 20. Each one should remain in the situation he was in when he was called. Verse 21. Were you a slave when you were called? Do not let it concern you— but if you can gain your freedom, take the opportunity. Verse 22. For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman. Conversely, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave. Verse 23. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Verse 24. Brothers, each one should remain in the situation he was in when God called him.
