FIRST READING

1 Samuel 3:1-10, (11-20)

Verse 1. And the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. Now in those days the word of the LORD was rare, and visions were scarce. Verse 2. And at that time Eli, whose eyesight had grown so dim that he could not see, was lying in his room. Verse 3. Before the lamp of God had gone out, Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was located. Verse 4. Then the LORD called to Samuel, and he answered, “Here I am.” Verse 5. He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. Verse 6. Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” Verse 7. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, because the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. Verse 8. Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” Then Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy. Verse 9. “Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Verse 10. Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.”

PSALM

Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18

Verse 1. For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD, You have searched me and known me.
Verse 2. You know when I sit and when I rise; You understand my thoughts from afar.
Verse 3. You search out my path and my lying down; You are aware of all my ways.
Verse 4. Even before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, O LORD.
Verse 5. You hem me in behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me.
Verse 6. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Verse 13. For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Verse 14. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well.
Verse 15. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Verse 16. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.
Verse 17. How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God, how vast is their sum!
Verse 18. If I were to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; and when I awake, I am still with You.

SECOND READING

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Verse 12. “Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything. Verse 13. “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food,” but God will destroy them both. The body is not intended for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. Verse 14. By His power God raised the Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also. Verse 15. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Verse 16. Or don’t you know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” Verse 17. But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit. Verse 18. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Verse 19. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; Verse 20. you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

GOSPEL

John 1:43-51

Verse 43. The next day Jesus decided to set out for Galilee. Finding Philip, He told him, “Follow Me.” Verse 44. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter. Verse 45. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law, the One the prophets foretold — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Verse 46. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. Verse 47. When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.” Verse 48. “How do You know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Verse 49. “Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Verse 50. Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” Verse 51. Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
