FIRST READING

Proverbs 22:1-9

Verse 1. A good name is more desirable than great riches; favor is better than silver and gold. Verse 2. The rich and the poor have this in common: The LORD is Maker of them all. Verse 3. The prudent see danger and take cover, but the simple keep going and suffer the consequences. Verse 4. The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life. Verse 5. Thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse; he who guards his soul stays far from them. Verse 6. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Verse 7. The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. Verse 8. He who sows injustice will reap disaster, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed. Verse 9. A generous man will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.

PSALM

Psalm 110

Verse 1. A Psalm of David. The LORD said to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
Verse 2. The LORD extends Your mighty scepter from Zion: “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
Verse 3. Your people shall be willing on Your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, to You belongs the dew of Your youth.
Verse 4. The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
Verse 5. The Lord is at Your right hand; He will crush kings in the day of His wrath.
Verse 6. He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead; He will crush the leaders far and wide.
Verse 7. He will drink from the brook by the road; therefore He will lift up His head.

SECOND READING

Luke 6:27-31

Verse 27. But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, Verse 28. bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Verse 29. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well. Verse 30. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back. Verse 31. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
