FIRST READING

Isaiah 9:2-7

Verse 2. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned. Verse 3. You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people rejoice before You as they rejoice at harvest time, as men rejoice in dividing the plunder. Verse 4. For as in the day of Midian You have shattered the yoke of their burden, the bar across their shoulders, and the rod of their oppressor. Verse 5. For every trampling boot of battle and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. Verse 6. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Verse 7. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night. Verse 9. Just then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. Verse 10. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Verse 11. Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord! Verse 12.
