FIRST READING
Micah 2:1-13
Verse 1. Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they accomplish it because the power is in their hands. Verse 2. They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses. They deprive a man of his home, a fellow man of his inheritance. Verse 3. Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am planning against this nation a disaster from which you cannot free your necks. Then you will not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of calamity. Verse 4. In that day they will take up a proverb against you and taunt you with this bitter lamentation: ‘We are utterly ruined! He has changed the portion of my people. How He has removed it from me! He has allotted our fields to traitors.’” Verse 5. Therefore, you will have no one in the assembly of the LORD to divide the land by lot. Verse 6. “Do not preach,” they preach. “Do not preach these things; disgrace will not overtake us.” Verse 7. Should it be said, O house of Jacob, “Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient? Are these the things He does?” Do not My words bring good to him who walks uprightly? Verse 8. But of late My people have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid robe from unsuspecting passersby like men returning from battle. Verse 9. You drive the women of My people from their pleasant homes. You take away My blessing from their children forever. Verse 10. Arise and depart, for this is not your place of rest, because its defilement brings destruction— a grievous destruction! Verse 11. If a man of wind were to come and say falsely, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be just the preacher for this people! Verse 12. I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; I will collect the remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in the midst of its pasture — a noisy throng. Verse 13. One who breaks open the way will go up before them; they will break through the gate, and go out by it. Their King will pass through before them, the LORD as their leader.
PSALM
Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19
SECOND READING
Matthew 24:15-31
Verse 15. So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand), Verse 16. then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Verse 17. Let no one on the housetop come down to retrieve anything from his house. Verse 18. And let no one in the field return for his cloak. Verse 19. How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers! Verse 20. Pray that your flight will not occur in the winter or on the Sabbath. Verse 21. For at that time there will be great tribulation, unseen from the beginning of the world until now, and never to be seen again. Verse 22. If those days had not been cut short, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, those days will be cut short. Verse 23. At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it. Verse 24. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive even the elect, if that were possible. Verse 25. See, I have told you in advance. Verse 26. So if they tell you, ‘There He is, in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Here He is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. Verse 27. For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Verse 28. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. Verse 29. Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ’ Verse 30. At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Verse 31. And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
