FIRST READING

Joshua 3:7-17

Verse 7. Now the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you just as I was with Moses. Verse 8. Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the waters, stand in the Jordan.’” Verse 9. So Joshua told the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.” Verse 10. He continued, “This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that He will surely drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites. Verse 11. Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go ahead of you into the Jordan. Verse 12. Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. Verse 13. When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD — the Lord of all the earth — touch down in the waters of the Jordan, its flowing waters will be cut off and will stand up in a heap.” Verse 14. So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carried the ark of the covenant ahead of them. Verse 15. Now the Jordan overflows its banks throughout the harvest season. But as soon as the priests carrying the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, Verse 16. the flowing water stood still. It backed up as far upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea ) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. Verse 17. The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel crossed over the dry ground, until the entire nation had crossed the Jordan.

FIRST READING

Micah 3:5-12

Verse 5. This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead My people astray, who proclaim peace while they chew with their teeth, but declare war against one who puts nothing in their mouths: Verse 6. Therefore night will come over you without visions, and darkness without divination. The sun will set on these prophets, and the daylight will turn black over them. Verse 7. Then the seers will be ashamed and the diviners will be disgraced. They will all cover their mouths because there is no answer from God.” Verse 8. As for me, however, I am filled with power by the Spirit of the LORD, with justice and courage, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin. Verse 9. Now hear this, O leaders of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who despise justice and pervert all that is right, Verse 10. who build Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with iniquity. Verse 11. Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice divination for money. Yet they lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? No disaster can come upon us.” Verse 12. Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, and the temple mount a wooded ridge.
