FIRST READING

Deuteronomy 26:16-27:7

Verse 16. The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. You must be careful to follow them with all your heart and with all your soul. Verse 17. Today you have proclaimed that the LORD is your God and that you will walk in His ways, keep His statutes and commandments and ordinances, and listen to His voice. Verse 18. And today the LORD has proclaimed that you are His people and treasured possession as He promised, that you are to keep all His commandments, Verse 19. that He will set you high in praise and name and honor above all the nations He has made, and that you will be a holy people to the LORD your God, as He has promised. Verse 1. Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Keep all the commandments I am giving you today. Verse 2. And on the day you cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, set up large stones and coat them with plaster. Verse 3. Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. Verse 4. And when you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and you are to coat them with plaster. Verse 5. Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them. Verse 6. You shall build the altar of the LORD your God with uncut stones and offer upon it burnt offerings to the LORD your God. Verse 7. There you are to sacrifice your peace offerings, eating them and rejoicing in the presence of the LORD your God.

PSALM

Psalm 119:41-48

Verse 41. May Your loving devotion come to me, O LORD, Your salvation, according to Your promise.
Verse 42. Then I can answer him who taunts, for I trust in Your word.
Verse 43. Never take Your word of truth from my mouth, for I hope in Your judgments.
Verse 44. I will always obey Your law, forever and ever.
Verse 45. And I will walk in freedom, for I have sought Your precepts.
Verse 46. I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, and I will not be ashamed.
Verse 47. I delight in Your commandments because I love them.
Verse 48. I lift up my hands to Your commandments, which I love, and I meditate on Your statutes.

FIRST READING

Proverbs 16:1-20

Verse 1. The plans of the heart belong to man, but the reply of the tongue is from the LORD. Verse 2. All a man’s ways are pure in his own eyes, but his motives are weighed out by the LORD. Verse 3. Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved. Verse 4. The LORD has made everything for His purpose— even the wicked for the day of disaster. Verse 5. Everyone who is proud in heart is detestable to the LORD; be assured that he will not go unpunished. Verse 6. By loving devotion and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one turns aside from evil. Verse 7. When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even the man’s enemies live at peace with him. Verse 8. Better a little with righteousness than great gain with injustice. Verse 9. A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. Verse 10. A divine verdict is on the lips of a king; his mouth must not betray justice. Verse 11. Honest scales and balances are from the LORD; all the weights in the bag are His concern. Verse 12. Wicked behavior is detestable for kings, for a throne is established through righteousness. Verse 13. Righteous lips are a king’s delight, and he who speaks honestly is beloved. Verse 14. The wrath of a king is a messenger of death, but a wise man will pacify it. Verse 15. When a king’s face brightens, there is life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring. Verse 16. How much better to acquire wisdom than gold! To gain understanding is more desirable than silver. Verse 17. The highway of the upright leads away from evil; he who guards his way protects his life. Verse 18. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Verse 19. It is better to be lowly in spirit among the humble than to divide the spoil with the proud. Verse 20. Whoever heeds instruction will find success, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

Matthew 19:16-22

Verse 16. Just then a man came up to Jesus and inquired, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to obtain eternal life?” Verse 17. “Why do you ask Me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” Verse 18. “Which ones?” the man asked. Jesus answered, “‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, Verse 19. honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” Verse 20. “All these I have kept,” said the young man. “What do I still lack?” Verse 21. Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” Verse 22. When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.
