Psalm 119:41-48

May Your loving devotion come to me, O LORD, Your salvation, according to Your promise.

Then I can answer him who taunts, for I trust in Your word.

Never take Your word of truth from my mouth, for I hope in Your judgments.

I will always obey Your law, forever and ever.

And I will walk in freedom, for I have sought Your precepts.

I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, and I will not be ashamed.

I delight in Your commandments because I love them.

I lift up my hands to Your commandments, which I love, and I meditate on Your statutes.

FIRST READING

Proverbs 16:1-20

Verse 1. The plans of the heart belong to man, but the reply of the tongue is from the LORD. Verse 2. All a man’s ways are pure in his own eyes, but his motives are weighed out by the LORD. Verse 3. Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved. Verse 4. The LORD has made everything for His purpose— even the wicked for the day of disaster. Verse 5. Everyone who is proud in heart is detestable to the LORD; be assured that he will not go unpunished. Verse 6. By loving devotion and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one turns aside from evil. Verse 7. When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even the man’s enemies live at peace with him. Verse 8. Better a little with righteousness than great gain with injustice. Verse 9. A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. Verse 10. A divine verdict is on the lips of a king; his mouth must not betray justice. Verse 11. Honest scales and balances are from the LORD; all the weights in the bag are His concern. Verse 12. Wicked behavior is detestable for kings, for a throne is established through righteousness. Verse 13. Righteous lips are a king’s delight, and he who speaks honestly is beloved. Verse 14. The wrath of a king is a messenger of death, but a wise man will pacify it. Verse 15. When a king’s face brightens, there is life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring. Verse 16. How much better to acquire wisdom than gold! To gain understanding is more desirable than silver. Verse 17. The highway of the upright leads away from evil; he who guards his way protects his life. Verse 18. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Verse 19. It is better to be lowly in spirit among the humble than to divide the spoil with the proud. Verse 20. Whoever heeds instruction will find success, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

Matthew 19:16-22

Verse 16. Just then a man came up to Jesus and inquired, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to obtain eternal life?” Verse 17. “Why do you ask Me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” Verse 18. “Which ones?” the man asked. Jesus answered, “‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, Verse 19. honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” Verse 20. “All these I have kept,” said the young man. “What do I still lack?” Verse 21. Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” Verse 22. When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.
