And after this all the Israelites came near, and Moses commanded them to do everything that the LORD had told him on Mount Sinai. Verse 33. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. Verse 34. But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. And when he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded, Verse 35. and the Israelites would see that the face of Moses was radiant. FIRST READING

Deuteronomy 10:10-22

Verse 10. I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, like the first time, and that time the LORD again listened to me and agreed not to destroy you. Verse 11. Then the LORD said to me, “Get up. Continue your journey ahead of the people, that they may enter and possess the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.” Verse 12. And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God by walking in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, Verse 13. and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD that I am giving you this day for your own good? Verse 14. Behold, to the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, and the earth and everything in it. Verse 15. Yet the LORD has set His affection on your fathers and loved them. And He has chosen you, their descendants after them, above all the peoples, even to this day. Verse 16. Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and stiffen your necks no more. Verse 17. For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God, showing no partiality and accepting no bribe. Verse 18. He executes justice for the fatherless and widow, and He loves the foreigner, giving him food and clothing. Verse 19. So you also must love the foreigner, since you yourselves were foreigners in the land of Egypt. Verse 20. You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him. Hold fast to Him and take your oaths in His name. Verse 21. He is your praise and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome wonders that your eyes have seen. Verse 22. Your fathers went down to Egypt, seventy in all, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.

SECOND READING

James 2:14-26

Verse 14. What good is it, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith, but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Verse 15. Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. Verse 16. If one of you tells him, “Go in peace; stay warm and well fed,” but does not provide for his physical needs, what good is that? Verse 17. So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead. Verse 18. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. Verse 19. You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that — and shudder. Verse 20. O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless? Verse 21. Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? Verse 22. You see that his faith was working with his actions, and his faith was perfected by what he did. Verse 23. And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called a friend of God. Verse 24. As you can see, a man is justified by his deeds and not by faith alone. Verse 25. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute justified by her actions when she welcomed the spies and sent them off on another route? Verse 26. As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
