Verse 34. Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Verse 35. Whenever the cloud was lifted from above the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out through all the stages of their journey. Verse 37. If the cloud was not lifted, they would not set out until the day it was taken up. Verse 38. Verse 3. Because Your loving devotion is better than life, my lips will glorify You.

Verse 8. My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.

FIRST READING

Daniel 3:1-18

Verse 1. King Nebuchadnezzar made a golden statue sixty cubits high and six cubits wide, and he set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. Verse 2. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to assemble the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the other officials of the provinces to attend the dedication of the statue he had set up. Verse 3. So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the rulers of the provinces assembled for the dedication of the statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it. Verse 4. Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “O people of every nation and language, this is what you are commanded: Verse 5. As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Verse 6. And whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into the blazing fiery furnace.” Verse 7. Therefore, as soon as all the people heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, and all kinds of music, the people of every nation and language would fall down and worship the golden statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Verse 8. At this time some astrologers came forward and maliciously accused the Jews, Verse 9. saying to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, may you live forever! Verse 10. You, O king, have issued a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the golden statue, Verse 11. and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into the blazing fiery furnace. Verse 12. But there are some Jews you have appointed to manage the province of Babylon — Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — who have ignored you, O king, and have refused to serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.” Verse 13. Then Nebuchadnezzar, furious with rage, summoned Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, Verse 14. and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is it true that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden statue I have set up? Verse 15. Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the statue I have made, very good. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the blazing fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?” Verse 16. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. Verse 17. If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver us from the blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king. Verse 18. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”

SECOND READING

Revelation 18:1-10, 19-20

Verse 1. After this I saw another angel descending from heaven with great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his glory. Verse 2. And he cried out in a mighty voice: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a lair for demons and a haunt for every unclean spirit, every unclean bird, and every detestable beast. Verse 3. All the nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her immorality. The kings of the earth were immoral with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy from the extravagance of her luxury.” Verse 4. Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins or contract any of her plagues. Verse 5. For her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. Verse 6. Give back to her as she has done to others; pay her back double for what she has done; mix her a double portion in her own cup. Verse 7. As much as she has glorified herself and lived in luxury, give her the same measure of torment and grief. In her heart she says, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow and will never see grief.’ Verse 8. Therefore her plagues will come in one day — death and grief and famine — and she will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.” Verse 9. Then the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her. Verse 10. In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.” Verse 19. Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep and mourn and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, where all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been destroyed.” Verse 20. Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, because God has pronounced for you His judgment against her.
