FIRST READING

Exodus 3:1-15

Verse 1. Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. Verse 2. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from within a bush. Moses saw the bush ablaze with fire, but it was not consumed. Verse 3. So Moses thought, “I must go over and see this marvelous sight. Why is the bush not burning up?” Verse 4. When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from within the bush, “Moses, Moses!” “Here I am,” he answered. Verse 5. “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Verse 6. Then He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. Verse 7. The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction of My people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their oppressors, and I am aware of their sufferings. Verse 8. I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey— the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. Verse 9. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached Me, and I have seen how severely the Egyptians are oppressing them. Verse 10. Therefore, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt.” Verse 11. But Moses asked God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” Verse 12. “I will surely be with you,” God said, “and this will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, all of you will worship God on this mountain.” Verse 13. Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ What should I tell them?” Verse 14. God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Verse 15. God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob — has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.

Jeremiah 15:15-21

Verse 15. You understand, O LORD; remember me and attend to me. Avenge me against my persecutors. In Your patience, do not take me away. Know that I endure reproach for Your honor. Verse 16. Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became my joy and my heart’s delight. For I bear Your name, O LORD God of Hosts. Verse 17. I never sat with the band of revelers, nor did I celebrate with them. Because Your hand was on me, I sat alone, for You have filled me with indignation. Verse 18. Why is my pain unending, and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You have indeed become like a mirage to me— water that is not there. Verse 19. Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words that are noble instead of worthless, you will be My spokesman. It is they who must turn to you, but you must not turn to them. Verse 20. Then I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to save and deliver you, declares the LORD. Verse 21. I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”

GOSPEL

Matthew 16:21-28

Verse 21. From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Verse 22. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. “Far be it from You, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to You!” Verse 23. But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” Verse 24. Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. Verse 25. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Verse 26. What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? Verse 27. For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done. Verse 28. Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
