FIRST READING

Genesis 37:5-11

Verse 5. Then Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more. Verse 6. He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: Verse 7. We were binding sheaves of grain in the field, and suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to mine.” Verse 8. “Do you intend to reign over us?” his brothers asked. “Will you actually rule us?” So they hated him even more because of his dream and his statements. Verse 9. Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers. “Look,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” Verse 10. He told his father and brothers, but his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream that you have had? Will your mother and brothers and I actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” Verse 11. And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept in mind what he had said.

PSALM

Psalm 105:1-6, 16-22, 45b

Verse 1. Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the nations.
Verse 2. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wonders.
Verse 3. Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.
Verse 4. Seek out the LORD and His strength; seek His face always.
Verse 5. Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels, and the judgments He has pronounced,
Verse 6. O offspring of His servant Abraham, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones.
Verse 16. He called down famine on the land and cut off all their supplies of food.
Verse 17. He sent a man before them— Joseph, sold as a slave.
Verse 18. They bruised his feet with shackles and placed his neck in irons,
Verse 19. until his prediction came true and the word of the LORD proved him right.
Verse 20. The king sent and released him; the ruler of peoples set him free.
Verse 21. He made him master of his household, ruler over all his substance,
Verse 22. to instruct his princes as he pleased and teach his elders wisdom.

FIRST READING

1 Kings 18:41-46

Verse 41. And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” Verse 42. So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the summit of Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees. Verse 43. “Go and look toward the sea,” he said to his servant. So the servant went and looked, and he said, “There is nothing there.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.” Verse 44. On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And Elijah replied, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’” Verse 45. Meanwhile, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel. Verse 46. And the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah, and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

PSALM

Psalm 85:8-13

Verse 8. I will listen to what God the LORD will say; for He will surely speak peace to His people and His saints; He will not let them return to folly.
Verse 9. Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that His glory may dwell in our land.
Verse 10. Loving devotion and faithfulness have joined together; righteousness and peace have kissed.
Verse 11. Faithfulness sprouts from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.
Verse 12. The LORD will indeed provide what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
Verse 13. Righteousness will go before Him to prepare the way for His steps.

SECOND READING

Matthew 16:1-4

Verse 1. Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven. Verse 2. But He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘The weather will be fair, for the sky is red,’ Verse 3. and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times. Verse 4. A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Then He left them and went away.
