Genesis 32:22-31
Verse 22. During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. Verse 23. He took them and sent them across the stream, along with all his possessions. Verse 24. So Jacob was left all alone, and there a man wrestled with him until daybreak. Verse 25. When the man saw that he could not overpower Jacob, he struck the socket of Jacob’s hip and dislocated it as they wrestled. Verse 26. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Verse 27. “What is your name?” the man asked. “Jacob,” he replied. Verse 28. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.” Verse 29. And Jacob requested, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed Jacob there. Verse 30. So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, “Indeed, I have seen God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” Verse 31. The sun rose above him as he passed by Penuel, and he was limping because of his hip.

Verse 1. “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost! Verse 2. Why spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of foods. Verse 3. Incline your ear and come to Me; listen, so that your soul may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant — My loving devotion promised to David. Verse 4. Behold, I have made him a witness to the nations, a leader and commander of the peoples. Verse 5. Surely you will summon a nation you do not know, and nations who do not know you will run to you. For the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, has bestowed glory on you.”

Romans 9:1-5
Verse 1. I speak the truth in Christ; I am not lying, as confirmed by my conscience in the Holy Spirit. Verse 2. I have deep sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. Verse 3. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my own flesh and blood, Verse 4. the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory and the covenants; theirs the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises. Verse 5. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them proceeds the human descent of Christ, who is God over all, forever worthy of praise! Amen.
GOSPEL
Matthew 14:13-21
Verse 13. When Jesus heard about John, He withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. But the crowds found out about it and followed Him on foot from the towns. Verse 14. When He stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick. Verse 15. When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late. Dismiss the crowds so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Verse 16. “They do not need to go away,” Jesus replied. “You give them something to eat.” Verse 17. “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. Verse 18. “Bring them here to Me,” Jesus said. Verse 19. And He directed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He spoke a blessing. Then He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. Verse 20. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. Verse 21. About five thousand men were fed, besides women and children.
