FIRST READING
Genesis 30:37-43
Verse 37. Jacob, however, took fresh branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees, and peeled the bark, exposing the white inner wood of the branches. Verse 38. Then he set the peeled branches in the watering troughs in front of the flocks coming in to drink. So when the flocks were in heat and came to drink, Verse 39. they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. Verse 40. Jacob set apart the young, but made the rest face the streaked dark-colored sheep in Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and did not put them with Laban’s animals. Verse 41. Whenever the stronger females of the flock were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they would breed in front of the branches. Verse 42. But if the animals were weak, he did not set out the branches. So the weaker animals went to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob. Verse 43. Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous. He owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.

1 Kings 4:29-34
Verse 29. And God gave Solomon wisdom, exceedingly deep insight, and understanding beyond measure, like the sand on the seashore. Verse 30. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than that of all the men of the East, greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. Verse 31. He was wiser than all men— wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and wiser than Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread throughout the surrounding nations. Verse 32. Solomon composed three thousand proverbs, and his songs numbered a thousand and five. Verse 33. He spoke of trees, from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop growing in the wall, and he taught about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish. Verse 34. So men of all nations came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.

Ephesians 6:10-18
Verse 10. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Verse 11. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. Verse 12. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Verse 13. Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand. Verse 14. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, Verse 15. and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. Verse 16. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Verse 17. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Verse 18. Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.
