FIRST READING

Genesis 29:31-30:24

Verse 31. When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. Verse 32. And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Reuben, for she said, “The LORD has seen my affliction. Surely my husband will love me now.” Verse 33. Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son as well.” So she named him Simeon. Verse 34. Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi. Verse 35. And once more she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” So she named him Judah. Then Leah stopped having children. Verse 1. When Rachel saw that she was not bearing any children for Jacob, she envied her sister. “Give me children, or I will die!” she said to Jacob. Verse 2. Jacob became angry with Rachel and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld children from you?” Verse 3. Then she said, “Here is my maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family.” Verse 4. So Rachel gave Jacob her servant Bilhah as a wife, and he slept with her, Verse 5. and Bilhah conceived and bore him a son. Verse 6. Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; He has heard my plea and given me a son.” So she named him Dan. Verse 7. And Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Verse 8. Then Rachel said, “In my great struggles, I have wrestled with my sister and won.” So she named him Naphtali. Verse 9. When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife. Verse 10. And Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. Verse 11. Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she named him Gad. Verse 12. When Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son, Verse 13. Leah said, “How happy I am! For the women call me happy.” So she named him Asher. Verse 14. Now during the wheat harvest, Reuben went out and found some mandrakes in the field. When he brought them to his mother, Rachel begged Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.” Verse 15. But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said Rachel, “he may sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.” Verse 16. When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night. Verse 17. And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore a fifth son to Jacob. Verse 18. Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my maidservant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar. Verse 19. Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob. Verse 20. “God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” And she named him Zebulun. Verse 21. After that, Leah gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah. Verse 22. Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb, Verse 23. and she conceived and gave birth to a son. “God has taken away my shame,” she said. Verse 24. She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”

PSALM

Psalm 105:1-11, 45b

Verse 1. Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the nations.
Verse 2. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wonders.
Verse 3. Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.
Verse 4. Seek out the LORD and His strength; seek His face always.
Verse 5. Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels, and the judgments He has pronounced,
Verse 6. O offspring of His servant Abraham, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones.
Verse 7. He is the LORD our God; His judgments carry throughout the earth.
Verse 8. He remembers His covenant forever, the word He ordained for a thousand generations—
Verse 9. the covenant He made with Abraham, and the oath He swore to Isaac.
Verse 10. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant:
Verse 11. “I will give you the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.”

Verse 1. As the time drew near for David to die, he charged his son Solomon, Verse 2. “I am about to go the way of all the earth. So be strong and prove yourself a man. Verse 3. And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways and to keep His statutes, commandments, ordinances, and decrees, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you turn, Verse 4. and so that the LORD may fulfill His promise to me: ‘If your descendants take heed to walk faithfully before Me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’

PSALM

Psalm 119:129-136

Verse 129. Wonderful are Your testimonies; therefore I obey them.
Verse 130. The unfolding of Your words gives light; it informs the simple.
Verse 131. I open my mouth and pant, longing for Your commandments.
Verse 132. Turn to me and show me mercy, as You do to those who love Your name.
Verse 133. Order my steps in Your word; let no sin rule over me.
Verse 134. Redeem me from the oppression of man, that I may keep Your precepts.

SECOND READING

Matthew 12:38-42

Verse 38. Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” Verse 39. Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Verse 40. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Verse 41. The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now One greater than Jonah is here. Verse 42. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here.
