FIRST READING

Genesis 29:9-14

Verse 9. While he was still speaking with them, Rachel arrived with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess. Verse 10. As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his mother’s brother Laban, with Laban’s sheep, he went up and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle’s sheep. Verse 11. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud. Verse 12. He told Rachel that he was Rebekah’s son, a relative of her father, and she ran and told her father. Verse 13. When Laban heard the news about his sister’s son Jacob, he ran out to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his home, where Jacob told him all that had happened. Verse 14. Then Laban declared, “You are indeed my own flesh and blood.” After Jacob had stayed with him a month,

PSALM

Psalm 105:1-11, 45b

Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name; make known His deeds among the nations.

Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wonders.

Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

Seek out the LORD and His strength; seek His face always.

Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels, and the judgments He has pronounced,

O offspring of His servant Abraham, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones.

He is the LORD our God; His judgments carry throughout the earth.

He remembers His covenant forever, the word He ordained for a thousand generations—

the covenant He made with Abraham, and the oath He swore to Isaac.

He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant:

“I will give you the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.”

FIRST READING

1 Kings 1:38-48

Verse 38. Then Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, went down and set Solomon on King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon. Verse 39. Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the ram’s horn, and all the people proclaimed, “Long live King Solomon!” Verse 40. All the people followed him, playing flutes and rejoicing with such a great joy that the earth was split by the sound. Verse 41. Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud uproar?” asked Joab. Verse 42. As he was speaking, suddenly Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest arrived. “Come in,” said Adonijah, “for you are a man of valor. You must be bringing good news.” Verse 43. “Not at all,” Jonathan replied. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king. Verse 44. And with Solomon, the king has sent Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, and they have set him on the king’s mule. Verse 45. Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there with rejoicing that rings out in the city. That is the noise you hear. Verse 46. Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. Verse 47. The king’s servants have also gone to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than your own name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king has bowed in worship on his bed, Verse 48. saying, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel! Today He has provided one to sit on my throne, and my eyes have seen it.’”

PSALM

Psalm 119:129-136

Wonderful are Your testimonies; therefore I obey them.

The unfolding of Your words gives light; it informs the simple.

I open my mouth and pant, longing for Your commandments.

Turn to me and show me mercy, as You do to those who love Your name.

Order my steps in Your word; let no sin rule over me.

Redeem me from the oppression of man, that I may keep Your precepts.

Make Your face shine upon Your servant, and teach me Your statutes.

My eyes shed streams of tears because Your law is not obeyed.

SECOND READING

Acts 7:44-53

Verse 44. Our fathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the wilderness. It was constructed exactly as God had directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen. Verse 45. And our fathers who received it brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations God drove out before them. It remained until the time of David, Verse 46. who found favor in the sight of God and asked to provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. Verse 47. But it was Solomon who built the house for Him. Verse 48. However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says: Verse 49. ‘Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or where will My place of repose be? Verse 50. Has not My hand made all these things?’ Verse 51. You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did. Verse 52. Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers — Verse 53. you who received the law ordained by angels, yet have not kept it.”
