FIRST READING
Jeremiah 42:18-22
Verse 18. For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and wrath were poured out on the residents of Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of cursing and horror, of vilification and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.’ Verse 19. The LORD has told you, O remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for sure that I have warned you today! Verse 20. For you have deceived yourselves by sending me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray to the LORD our God on our behalf, and as for all that the LORD our God says, tell it to us and we will do it.’ Verse 21. For I have told you today, but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in all He has sent me to tell you. Verse 22. Now therefore, know for sure that by sword and famine and plague you will die in the place where you desire to go to reside.”

FIRST READING
Jeremiah 38:1-13
Verse 1. Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard that Jeremiah had been telling all the people: Verse 2. “This is what the LORD says: Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but whoever surrenders to the Chaldeans will live; he will retain his life like a spoil of war, and he will live. Verse 3. This is what the LORD says: This city will surely be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.” Verse 4. Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.” Verse 5. “Here he is,” replied King Zedekiah. “He is in your hands, since the king can do nothing to stop you.” Verse 6. So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah with ropes into the cistern, which had no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud. Verse 7. Now Ebed-melech the Cushite, a court official in the royal palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put into the cistern. While the king was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin, Verse 8. Ebed-melech went out from the king’s palace and said to the king, Verse 9. “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have dropped him into the cistern, where he will starve to death, for there is no more bread in the city.” Verse 10. So the king commanded Ebed-melech the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and pull Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” Verse 11. Then Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the king’s palace, to a place below the storehouse. From there he took old rags and worn-out clothes and lowered them with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. Verse 12. Ebed-melech the Cushite cried out to Jeremiah, “Put these worn-out rags and clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so, Verse 13. and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

SECOND READING
Matthew 10:5-23
Verse 5. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go onto the road of the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Verse 6. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. Verse 7. As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ Verse 8. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. Verse 9. Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts. Verse 10. Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions. Verse 11. Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on. Verse 12. As you enter the home, greet its occupants. Verse 13. If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it, but if it is not, let your peace return to you. Verse 14. And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. Verse 15. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. Verse 16. Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Verse 17. But beware of men, for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues. Verse 18. On My account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. Verse 19. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say. Verse 20. For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Verse 21. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death. Verse 22. You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. Verse 23. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
