FIRST READING

Genesis 12:1-9

Verse 1. Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. Verse 2. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. Verse 3. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you. ” Verse 4. So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Verse 5. And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Verse 6. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the Oak of Moreh at Shechem. And at that time the Canaanites were in the land. Verse 7. Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring. ” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. Verse 8. From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. SECOND READING

Romans 4:13-25

Verse 13. For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world was not given through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. Verse 14. For if those who live by the law are heirs, faith is useless and the promise is worthless, Verse 15. because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression. Verse 16. Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may rest on grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring — not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. Verse 17. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist. Verse 18. Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” Verse 19. Without weakening in his faith, he acknowledged the decrepitness of his body (since he was about a hundred years old) and the lifelessness of Sarah’s womb. Verse 20. Yet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, Verse 21. being fully persuaded that God was able to do what He had promised. Verse 22. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” Verse 23. Now the words “it was credited to him” were written not only for Abraham, Verse 24. but also for us, to whom righteousness will be credited— for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. Verse 25. He was delivered over to death for our trespasses and was raised to life for our justification.

GOSPEL

Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26

Verse 9. As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him. Verse 10. Later, as Jesus was dining at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples. Verse 11. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” Verse 12. On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. Verse 13. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. ” Verse 18. While Jesus was saying these things, a synagogue leader came and knelt before Him. “My daughter has just died,” he said. “But come and place Your hand on her, and she will live.” Verse 19. So Jesus got up and went with him, along with His disciples. Verse 20. Suddenly a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak. Verse 21. She said to herself, “If only I touch His cloak, I will be healed.” Verse 22. Jesus turned and saw her. “Take courage, daughter,” He said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that very hour. Verse 23. When Jesus entered the house of the synagogue leader, He saw the flute players and the noisy crowd. Verse 24. “Go away,” He told them. “The girl is not dead, but asleep.” And they laughed at Him. Verse 25. After the crowd had been put outside, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. Verse 26. And the news about this spread throughout that region.
