Acts 2:1-21

Verse 1. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Verse 2. Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. Verse 3. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. Verse 4. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Verse 5. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. Verse 6. And when this sound rang out, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking his own language. Verse 7. Astounded and amazed, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? Verse 8. How is it then that each of us hears them in his own native language? Verse 9. Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Verse 10. Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, Verse 11. both Jews and converts to Judaism; Cretans and Arabs— we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Verse 12. Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Verse 13. But others mocked them and said, “They are drunk on new wine!” Verse 14. Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice, and addressed the crowd: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen carefully to my words. Verse 15. These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It is only the third hour of the day! Verse 16. No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: Verse 17. ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Verse 18. Even on My menservants and maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. Verse 19. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. Verse 20. The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord. Verse 21. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Numbers 11:24-30

Verse 24. So Moses went out and relayed to the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered seventy of the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent. Verse 25. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and placed that Spirit on the seventy elders. As the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied — but they never did so again. Verse 26. Two men, however, had remained in the camp — one named Eldad and the other Medad — and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those listed, but they had not gone out to the tent, and they prophesied in the camp. Verse 27. A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” Verse 28. Joshua son of Nun, the attendant to Moses since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!” Verse 29. But Moses replied, “Are you jealous on my account? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would place His Spirit on them!” Verse 30. Then Moses returned to the camp, along with the elders of Israel.

PSALM

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b

Verse 24. How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures.
Verse 25. Here is the sea, vast and wide, teeming with creatures beyond number, living things both great and small.
Verse 26. There the ships pass, and Leviathan, which You formed to frolic there.
Verse 27. All creatures look to You to give them their food in due season.
Verse 28. When You give it to them, they gather it up; when You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good things.
Verse 29. When You hide Your face, they are terrified; when You take away their breath, they die and return to dust.
Verse 30. When You send Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth.
Verse 31. May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works.
Verse 32. He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they smolder.
Verse 33. I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
Verse 34. May my meditation be pleasing to Him, for I rejoice in the LORD.
Verse 35. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Hallelujah!

1 Corinthians 12:3b-13

Verse 3. Therefore I inform you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. Verse 4. There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. Verse 5. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. Verse 6. There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people. Verse 7. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. Verse 8. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by the same Spirit, Verse 9. to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, Verse 10. to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. Verse 11. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines. Verse 12. The body is a unit, though it is composed of many parts. And although its parts are many, they all form one body. So it is with Christ. Verse 13. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given one Spirit to drink.

GOSPEL

John 20:19-23

Verse 19. It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them. Verse 20. After He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Verse 21. Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so also I am sending you.” Verse 22. When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Verse 23. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”

GOSPEL

John 7:37-39

Verse 37. On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Verse 38. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’” Verse 39. He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
