FIRST READING
Genesis 12:1-4a
Verse 1. Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. Verse 2. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. Verse 3. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you. ” Verse 4. So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him.

SECOND READING
Romans 4:1-5, 13-17
Verse 1. What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has discovered? Verse 2. If Abraham was indeed justified by works, he had something to boast about, but not before God. Verse 3. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Verse 4. Now the wages of the worker are not credited as a gift, but as an obligation. Verse 5. However, to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness. Verse 13. For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world was not given through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. Verse 14. For if those who live by the law are heirs, faith is useless and the promise is worthless, Verse 15. because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression. Verse 16. Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may rest on grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring — not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. Verse 17. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist.

John 3:1-17
Verse 1. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. Verse 2. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with him.” Verse 3. Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. ” Verse 4. “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?” Verse 5. Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Verse 6. Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit. Verse 7. Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’ Verse 8. The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” Verse 9. “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. Verse 10. “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and you do not understand these things? Verse 11. Truly, truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, and yet you people do not accept our testimony. Verse 12. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? Verse 13. No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven— the Son of Man. Verse 14. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, Verse 15. that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. Verse 16. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Verse 17. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

GOSPEL
Matthew 17:1-9
Verse 1. After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. Verse 2. There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. Verse 3. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking with Jesus. Verse 4. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will put up three shelters — one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Verse 5. While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” Verse 6. When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown in terror. Verse 7. Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” He said. “Do not be afraid.” Verse 8. And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. Verse 9. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Do not tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
